Patten Free Library is offering a variety of summer reading programs for students entering 6th through 12th grades. The programs offered this summer season are free for patrons in this age group residing within the library’s service area or who are enrolled at Regional School Unit 1.
The library’s traditional incentive-based reading program “R.S.U. 1 Reads,” starts on June 19, but students can start reading books after the last day of school. Participants can claim a small prize or coupon for every book they read of at least 100 pages in length.
There is a new list of alternative “learning activities” for which participants can also claim prizes. Scratch-off tickets that reveal bigger prizes and gift certificates will be given to participants who reach milestones of 5, 10, 15, and 20 books and/or learning activities. As always, local businesses are supporting the program by donating the gifts and prizes that readers can win simply by reading and learning.
“We’re really excited about the range of activities for participants in our summer reading program this year,” said Roberta Jordan, the outreach and instruction librarian at Patten. “We’re hoping that in addition to reading, teens and ‘tweens will write stories or visit all the historical markers in town, or participate in our new letterbox challenge, which is a kind of treasure hunt. These activities will also earn them the popular “Bath Bucks” and coupons honored by local businesses. Of course, if participants only want to read, we’re thrilled with that option, too. There are lots of choices, and hopefully something for everyone.”
The Library also features its Teen Summer Nights movie series on Wednesday evenings starting June 19. Movies will be shown in the library’s air-conditioned Community Room; show time is 6 p.m.
The full schedule includes:
Wednesday, June 19th Captain Marvel (2019) PG-13, 128 min.
Wednesday, June 26th Five Feet Apart (2019) PG-13, 120 min.

“We all know that there is no more important summer activity than reading, and that by maintaining reading skills students are more likely to succeed in school and in life,” said Library Director Lesley Dolinger, “We’re delighted that ‘R.S.U. 1 Reads!’ has become a community-wide effort on the part of the library, local schools, and local businesses, and hope many students continue to participate.”
