BIDDEFORD — Denny’s restaurant fans who have been patiently awaiting the opening of a restaurant in Biddeford may not have to wait much longer.

The new restaurant, located at 45 Boulder Way, is expected to open in two to three weeks, said a local representative. The building is the site of a former Ruby Tuesday restaurant and has been vacant since August 2016.

A Facebook page for the upcominng restaurant posted in May that the diner was seeking cooks, hosts, servers and dishwashers. According to a restaurant spokesman, the restaurant will have about 70 employees.

The Denny’s restaurant building is about 5,000 square feet and located at the  Mailhot Plaza, close to the Walmart Supercenter, a short distance away from the Biddeford Crossing shopping center and about one-third of a mile from the Maine Turnpike.

The Biddeford restaurant will be the sixth location of the national diner chain to locate in Maine. There are currently Denny’s restaurants in Portland, Auburn, Bangor, Ellsworth and Augusta.

Denny’s began as Danny’s Doughnuts in Lakewood, California, in 1953, and later evolved to Denny’s. Today, the restaurant chain is headquartered in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with more than 1,700 restaurant locations worldwide.

Denny’s is known for its hearty diner food served 24 hours a day. Signature items include a number of “Slams,” breakfast combination meals that typically include eggs, meat and pancakes or waffles. The restaurant also has a “Fit Fare” menu with items that include an egg white and vegetable omelet.
