Bertram D. Fecteau

AMESBURY, Mass. – Bertram D. Fecteau, 95, of Gorham, Maine, former longtime Amesbury, Mass., resident, died Thursday, November 28, 2019. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Katherine (Ellard) Fecteau.

Born March 8, 1924, in Newfoundland, Canada, he was the son of the late Philip Fecteau and Jessie (Groves) Fecteau, and was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School, and Mass. Maritime Academy.

A veteran of World War II, he was a commissioned officer serving with the United States Navy from December 17, 1943, until his honorable discharge on July 10, 1946, with the rank of Lieutenant JG. As a very proud veteran, Mr. Fecteau was part of the 2014 Honor Flight New England to Washington, DC to see the World War II Memorial, which held a very special place in his heart.

Returning home from his military service, Bert, as he was known by many, went on to receive Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Boston University, and to lead a lifetime career as an educator, coach and assistant principal. His teaching career started at Amesbury High School, where he taught mathematics for 15 years, 12 of which he served as the Head of the Math Department. He founded the Track Team at Amesbury High School, leading them to be Northeastern Conference Champions from 1957 to 1961, undefeated in duel meets. From 1965 until his retirement in 1986, Bert was the Assistant Principal at Pentucket Regional High School.

In 2006, he was inducted into the Amesbury Educational Foundation Inc.

Hall of Honor for excellence in education, and in 2017, he was inducted into the Amesbury High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his unrelenting dedication and successes as coach of the Track Team. He was a Town meeting representative as well as a member of the Amesbury High School Building Committee.

In his spare time, he was an avid sports fan, enjoyed playing cribbage and suduko, and loved endless hours tending to his garden.

His life’s legacy will always be treasured by his son, David Fecteau and wife, Debbie, of Salem, CT, and four daughters, Linda Fecteau of Lebanon, NH , Diane Fecteau of Gorham, ME, Barbara Fecteau of Seabrook, NH, and Jean, and husband Chad Butts of Gorham, ME, as well as two grandchildren, Garrett Fecteau and wife Keri of W. Hartford, CT, and Derek Fecteau and wife Tinsel, of Brentwood, TN; brother, Richard Fecteau of Lynn, MA; sister-in-law, Marjorie Fecteau of Peabody, MA, along with several nieces and nephews, extended family, dear friends and colleagues. He was predeceased by two brothers, Phillip Fecteau of Peabody, MA, and Robert Fecteau of Lynn, MA.

Visiting hours at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury will be Sunday, December 8, 2019 from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M. immediately followed by a Time of Remembrances by family and friends. Burial will be private for the family.

Donations in his memory can be made to the Hospice of Southern Maine or Honor Flight New England.
