Peter Llewellyn Sheldon

PORTLAND – Peter Llewellyn Sheldon, 85, of Standish, passed away of natural causes on Feb. 5, 2021. Peter, son of Huntington and Magda Merck, was born in New York, N.Y. and attended both Brooks and Exeter Academy. He went on to Harvard and graduated Summa Cum Laude. He subsequently attended Harvard Law School and was awarded a master’s degree from the University of Chicago. In 1961 Peter met the love of his life Ann in Rome, Italy. After marrying, they returned to the United States where Peter procured a teaching position at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh. Peter always had an affinity for Maine and during law school purchased an old trapper’s cabin on Sebago Lake where he and Ann would retreat to during the summers when he was teaching in Pittsburgh. Eventually he was offered a position at St. Joseph’s College in Standish to teach English and Art History. This allowed them to move permanently to Maine. After 10 years at the school, he retired to focus on investing. Peter was a generous donor to many local institutions including the Portland Museum of Art, Maine Medical, The Maine ACLU, The Victorian Mansion, the Shakers at Sabbath Day Lake and The Portland School of Art to name just a few. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ann Sheldon; his daughter, Clare Manz and her husband Russell and daughter, Audrey; and his son, Valentine Sheldon and his wife Michelle and their two daughters, Eleanor and Gwendolyn. Peter requested there be no funeral or memorial service. Online condolences may be expressed at https://www.hobbsfuneralhome.com/.
