Alice Devine Bothel

CAPE ELIZABETH – Alice Devine Bothel, 96, died on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021 after a brief illness. She was born on Jan. 25, 1925, the youngest of nine children to Frank and Mary (Gill) Devine of South Portland. Alice attended school in South Portland and was a congregant of Holy Cross Church.

Alice worked at Portland Copper Company and the South Portland Shipyard before meeting, and marrying Walter “Bob” Bothel in 1950, who she would tell you was “the only man” for her. Alice was the bookkeeper for Bothel’s Garage in Cape Elizabeth until her retirement.

She and Bob spent many hours working on their elaborate vegetable gardens, cutting wood to keep their home warm, boating, and spending time with their extended family.

In their later years, they traveled to warm destinations with lifelong friends, the Grays. When Alice had time to herself, she could be found reading on her sunny patio. Alice spent decades with her friends from aerobic dance class and those she bowled with at Big 20 in Scarborough. She left a lasting impression with all who met her.

Alice was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband; her sisters, Marie Regan, Florence Dougherty, Rita Preston, Catherine Shaw, Eleanor Murray, Ruth Wright, Elizabeth Cormier, and her brother, Francis Devine.

She is survived by her son, Robert and his partner Trae Winchenbaugh of Cape Elizabeth, with whom she made her home, son Stephen and wife Patt of Cape Elizabeth, daughter Catherine of Portland; grandchildren, Cody, Ryanne, Elise, Amelia, Adam and Nick; and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves many nieces and nephews with whom she was very close.

Visitation is scheduled for Thursday, March 4, 2021 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. followed by a private service. A memorial reception will be held at a later date.
