Stephen M. Rose

FALMOUTH – Stephen M. Rose died on March 2, 2021, after celebrating his 81st birthday a few days prior. He was lovingly cared for by the staff at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House.He was born in Des Moines, Iowa and with his parents, Sidney and Ann Rose, moved to Cleveland. He married Wilma Webber of Portland in 1961.He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Marjorie Pettinato and her husband Robert Pettinato, Jr. and son, Evan Rose. Stephen is also survived by four grandchildren, Robert III, Emily, Elizabeth, and Alexandra Pettinato, all of whom were adored by their grandfather. He graduated with a B.A from Brandeis University (Waltham, Mass.) in 1961. He later received a master’s of social work from Case Western Reserve University, and a doctorate from Brandeis’s Heller School for Social Policy and Management . Stephen was a professor at the School of Social Welfare at SUNY Stony Brook, and was then the director of the School of Social Work and a tenured full professor at the University of New England in Biddeford. He was a founding director of the UNE- Spurwink Research Center also in Biddeford. He established and was the director of many community projects and programs. Steve was the author of and co-edited several academic books and research journal articles. He was the recipient of three Fulbright grants. During his career, Steve was an invited speaker to several universities in the United States, and Europe. He was given an Honorary Doctoral Degree from the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland.
