Robert F. Caterina

WESTBROOK – Robert was born on Nov. 9, 1932 at Queens Hospital in Portland (now Northern Light Mercy Hospital) to Doris (House/French) Caterina and Anthony Caterina. He died peacefully on Feb. 1, 2021 at Springbrook Center in Westbrook.

Robert graduated from Portland High School, class of 1950, where he was a member of the glee club, appeared in the production of the operetta “The Belle of Barcelona”, and was captain of the track team his senior year.

Robert also sang in the choir of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland and was a member of the Andrews Post Drum and Bugle Corps. Robert attended Northeast and New York Business Colleges. He served as a cryptograph operator in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, stationed in Tokyo, Japan.

Robert was employed in New York with a patent law firm and was promoted to head of the foreign patent and trademark department. Upon retiring in 1989, Robert returned to Portland where he resided and devotedly took care of his mother until her death in 1995.

Robert was predeceased by his brothers, Francis, John and Albert as well as sisters-in-law, Rita and Mary.

He is survived by his sister-in-law Dorothy; nephews, Anthony, Andrew, John G-Jr. and John J., nieces, Jane, Jean-Marie, Janet and Patricia; and many grandnephews and grandnieces.

Robert wanted to express specific appreciation to his grandnephew, Jamaal Caterina, for his help and kindness during the last few months, his friends and neighbors, Jim and Stephanie Melaugh, and to his long-time best friend and associate, Bob House.

Robert will be remembered for his caring generosity to his family and friends, his witty sense of humor, and his for love of theatre, music, art, fashion, gardening, travel, the beach, card games, and animals, especially cats.

A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery in South Portland on June 2 at 10 a.m.
