Susan E. Rogers

PORTLAND – Susan E. Rogers, 70, of Portland, passed away on Feb. 28, 2021 with her family present. She was born in 1950, the second child of Charles and Ellen (Burns) Rogers. She was educated in Portland schools, graduating from Deering High School in 1968. She also graduated from Westbrook College in 1970 and from the University of Southern Maine in 1972. She attended graduate school at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Susan began her career as a teacher of English at Lincoln Junior High School. In the last many years of her career, she worked for L.L.Bean in Maine and greater Washington, D.C.

Susan had maintained sobriety since May 4, 1987 with the help of Alcoholics Anonymous. She was an active member until she died and was profoundly grateful for all the fellowship they had given her. She shared her path of sobriety with many special and cherished friends.

Susan enjoyed volunteering during her career and retirement. She was an avid knitter. She helped in schools in Maine, hospice in Washington, D.C. and animal rescue on Cape Ann in Massachusetts.

She was predeceased by her parents; and her close friend, Chuck Leary.

She is survived by her brothers, Charles and his wife Denise of Old Orchard Beach, Paul and his wife Maureen of Lincoln, N.H., John of Surprise, Ariz., Thomas of Denver, William and his wife Patty of Portland, David and his wife Laura of Mechanicsville, Va., Mark of Portland, and Timothy of Lake Worth, Fla. She is also survived by nieces, Alicia Golden, Vanessa, Kaitlyn, Lilly and Emma Rogers and nephew, Luke Rogers; as well as grandnephew, Reid Golden and grandnieces, Charlie and Emerson Golden, and Vivian O’Connel.

Susan also leaves behind her closest friend, Susan Sirois and her family as well as the Leary family to whom she was “related” for many years. She cherished these friendships as she did those with, Ann Thoits, Margaret Semple, Polly Campbell and many others.

The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. LuEmerson for her care, Azura and her daughter Daphne for their love and care, and especially our brother, Paul and his wife, Maureen for their tireless care of our sister.

The family would also like to thank the Gosnell Hospice home for the care they gave our sister in her final days.

A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 5 at Jones Rich and Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland.
