ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Rougned Odor snapped a 10th-inning tie with his first hit as a Yankee, Gio Urshela homered and drove in three runs, and New York rallied Sunday to avoid a weekend sweep with an 8-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Urshela hit a two-run homer in the third inning. His fourth hit of the day, a two-out single in the 10th off Collin McHugh (0-1), helped the Yankees put away the AL champions, who were on the verge of completing a three-game sweep before giving up a tying run in the eighth.
Odor was in the lineup for the first time since being acquired in a trade from the Texas Rangers. Cleanly shaven after sporting a scruffy beard for years in Texas, he was 0 for 4 before singling to center on a 3-2 pitch to break a 4-4 tie. Gary Sánchez followed with an RBI single before Urshela finished off the Rays, who allowed the fourth run of the inning to score on an error.
Aroldis Chapman (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth, and Albert Abreu got the final three outs.
INDIANS 5, TIGERS 2: Logan Allen recovered from a bumpy first inning to get his first win with Cleveland, and the Indians completed a three-game sweep against visiting Detroit.
Allen (1-1) found his rhythm after hitting a batter on his second pitch and walking two in the first innings. He allowed one run and two hits in five innings.
MARINERS 8, TWINS 6: Kyle Seager hit his second homer of the game, a three-run drive in the ninth inning, to complete Seattle’s comeback from a six-run deficit in Minneapolis.
Seager had four hits and Taylor Trammell also homered for Seattle, which trailed 6-0 going into the sixth. The Mariners won a road series for the first time since Sept. 11-13, 2019, at Arizona.
Byron Buxton continued his early season success with a homer, a double and a single for the Twins.
ROYALS 4, WHITE SOX 3: Michael A. Taylor scored when Garrett Crochet misplayed Andrew Benintendi’s bunt in the 10th inning, giving Kansas City a win at Chicago.
Greg Holland (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the win, and Kyle Zimmer worked a perfect 10th for his first career save.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
DIAMONDBACKS 7, REDS 0: Luke Weaver retired the first 17 batters he faced, Eduardo Escobar homered for the fourth straight game and Arizona beat visiting Cincinnati.
Weaver (1-0) took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up a broken-bat single to Eugenio Suarez, whose ground ball found a hole up the middle.
DODGERS 3, NATIONALS 0: Clayton Kershaw pitched six innings of five-hit ball to win an outstanding duel with Max Scherzer, and host Los Angeles finished a three-game sweep.
Rookie Zach McKinstry homered and drove in all three runs for the defending World Series champion Dodgers, who are off to a major league-best start of 8-2 despite playing this series without injured former MVP outfielders Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger.
Kershaw (2-1) struck out six with no walks.
Scherzer (0-1) also pitched six innings, allowing on runs on three hits, with five strikeouts and a walk.
PIRATES 7, CUBS 1: JT Brubaker pitched into the sixth inning and had the first three RBI of his career to lead Pittsburgh to a win at home.
Brubaker (1-0) allowed one run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and one walk. His two-run single down the right-field line capped a three-run second inning and gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead.
BREWERS 9, CARDINALS 3: Avisail Garcia homered for the second day in a row, Travis Shaw and Manny Pina also connected and Milwaukee won at St. Louis.
Garcia, who drove in five runs in a 9-5 win Saturday, and Shaw hit early drives that helped the Brewers build a 7-0 lead in the second inning.
GIANTS 4, ROCKIES 0: Anthony DeSclafani and three relievers combined to scatter eight hits as San Francisco completed a three-game sweep against visiting Colorado.
PHILLIES 7, BRAVES 6: Didi Gregorius hit a three-run homer in Philadelphia’s four-run fourth inning and hit a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the ninth to help the visiting Phillies snap Atlanta’s four-game winning streak.
Alec Bohm doubled off Braves closer Will Smith to begin the ninth, advanced to third on a bunt and scored to make it 7-6 on Gregorius’ fly to shallow left. Marcell Ozuna’s throw bounced twice before Bohm was initially called safe – even though it appeared he didn’t get his foot on the plate against catcher Travis d’Arnaud’s tag attempt.
The play was reviewed and upheld, prompting fans at Truist Park to throw debris into the outfield.
INTERLEAGUE
PADRES 2, RANGERS 0: Trent Grisham and Manny Machado homered, Craig Stammen led a parade of six effective San Diego relievers after starter Adrian Morejon left early with an injury, and the Padres finished a three-game sweep in Arlington, Texas.
Grisham pulled a 1-0 fastball into the right-field stands off Mike Foltynewicz (0-2), who had retired the first nine batters. Machado hammered a 2-2 changeup off Ian Kennedy deep down the left-field line leading off the ninth.
Morejon retired the first two batters and walked Joey Gallo before departing with an elbow/forearm strain. He will be re-evaluated on Monday.
