WATERFORD — A man on a work crew clearing brush along Keoka Beach Trail died Wednesday after a tree top struck him in the head.

The 50-year-old man from Harrison was a member of Searles Excavation of Harrison working in the area of 86 Keoka Beach Trail, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy James Urquhart.

According to the report released by Urquhart, the man cut a tree and the top detached and struck him. Work crew members immediately provided assistance.

Emergency medical personnel from surrounding towns responded to the scene. The man was declared dead at the scene from traumatic head injuries, Urquhart said. Authorities were first contacted at 2:17 p.m.

The man’s name is not being released until his family has been notified.

Oxford County deputies are investigating the accident with the State Medical Examiner’s Office and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Investigators were still at the scene late afternoon.
