Miles Albert Nugent

GRAY – Miles Albert Nugent, 94, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2021, surrounded by his loving family at the home of his eldest daughter, Anne and son-in-law, Chris in Gray, Maine.

Miles was born on July 19, 1926, in Brewer, Maine. The fourth and youngest child of the late Allen and Josephine (Piper) Nugent. At the age of five his father abandoned the family. Due to her medical issues, his mother was unable to raise the children on her own and Miles spent the rest of his youth in orphanages and foster homes. Although his childhood was less than favorable, he lived by the adage when life gives you lemons make lemonade. It would be nearly impossible to find a more humble, compassionate and appreciative human than Miles.

In October of 1944, he proudly joined the United States Navy and served in the third Battalion 143rd Construction Unit in the Philippines. After completing his military duty, he returned to Bangor and began his career at the Bangor Daily News in the pressroom. He retired from the newspaper in October of 1988 after 44 loyal years of “putting ink on paper.”

On April 16, 1955, he married the love of his life, Lidia Marino, at St Mary’s Church in Bangor. Miles treasured Lidia and they shared 66 years of marriage filled with love, trust and faith.

Miles was a devoted family man who cherished his three daughters, Anne, Linda and Julie. They knew their “Daddy” would always be there for them when needed.

He spent years as an eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s in Bangor and was a Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered at soup kitchens, schools and many other organizations throughout his life.

Miles enjoyed many trips during his retirement with his wife to Italy, including her hometown of FiglineVegliaturo, Italy.

He taught all who knew him that the greatest joys in life come from the love of your family and your faith in God. Miles will be sorely missed by his family and all who had the privilege to know him.

Miles is predeceased by his brother, Allen Nugent; sister, Lois Ruther; brother-in-law, John Marino.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lidia of Gray; daughters, Anne Wilson and son-in-law, Chris of Gray; Linda Rideout and son-in-law, Scott of Howland; Julie Thibeault and son-in-law, David of Howland; sister, Grace Nugent of Bangor; his loving grandchildren, Elise and husband Dr. Jacob Furey of Falmouth; Nathan Wilson and wife Rebecca; David Green and wife Jesse; Erica and husband Michael Anderson; step grandchildren, Angel and husband Loren King of Mars Hill; Alicia and husband Adam Levesque of Windham and Kailin Rideout of Windham; eleven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 14, 2021 at 10 a.m., at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland, Maine. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery, 449 Ohio Street, Bangor, Maine at 11 a.m.
