Karen Andrew Alden

GORHAM – Karen Andrew Alden, 68, passed away on May 12, 2021 at Maine Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Karen was born on Jan. 24, 1953 to Arthur and Sarah Andrew of Gorham.

She attended the Gorham school system, where she met her husband, John Alden, in elementary school. Karen attended the University of New England from 1971 to 1973, then graduated from the University of Maine in 1975 with a B.A. in sociology. Karen married John Alden in 1974 and they remained together until her passing. John and Karen had two children, Matthew and Abby.

Karen began her career in social services at Goodwill Industries in Portland. She proudly served two terms on the Gorham School Committee and then returned to college in 1991 to obtain her master’s degree in education. After graduating, she went on to work in the Gorham school system from 1993 to 1998 as a guidance counselor.

Above all, Karen will be remembered for her sense of humor, her kindness and her ability to connect with people from all walks of life. She loved to be out in nature and appreciated all of the outdoor hobbies Maine has to offer, including skiing, fishing, kayaking, and gardening. She was also an avid bird watcher.

Karen is survived by her husband, John G. Alden; children, Matthew Alden and Abby Alden; her brother, Michael Andrew and his wife, Bunny; father-in-law, John B. Alden; her sister-in-law, Deborah Loveitt and her husband Burleigh, sister-in-law, Susan Murray, sister-in-law, Heather Alden; and many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Karen’s life will be held 2 p.m., Friday, May 21 at the Windham Chapel of Dolby, Blais and Segee, 434 River Rd.
