Fire safety surveys resume

Gorham Fire Department will resume its Fire Safety Survey Program beginning June 1 as part of overall fire prevention efforts and the department’s mission statement. The program had been suspended because of COVID-19.

Fire Inspector Charles Jarrett said in an announcement that the Safety Survey’s focus is on 44 items of major concern and will be conducted by on-duty fire and EMS personnel.

Under the program, buildings occupied by businesses and commercial enterprises are surveyed in Gorham and, although not a complete code compliance inspection, they are intended to reduce the loss of life and property by identifying fire hazards and possible code violations prior to an incident.

“As a result of these surveys, a complete fire prevention inspection may be warranted and conducted,” Jarrett said.

St. Anne’s helping hands

During the months of May and June, St. Anne Parish is offering a helping hand to support the mission of Mother Seton House in Fryeburg.

All are invited to take an empty baby bottle or bottles home from the parish at 299 Main St. in Gorham, fill them with cash and return them by June 20. All proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit home for pregnant women in difficult circumstances.

The organization offers education, counseling and support to all women in need, regardless of race or religion.

“The most important thing we provide is a loving home, a safe haven for women as they prepare to give birth and nurture their newborns, a place of comfort and learning,” said Cyndi Broyer, director of Mother Seton House. “This safe, secure environment provides women with a chance to build confidence and acquire the skills needed to break the cycle of poverty.”

Each woman at the house is given a mentor to help her set goals and work towards achieving them.

“We help moms learn about cooking, nutrition, baby care, child development, budgeting and housekeeping,” Broyer said. “Anything moms tell us they want to learn. It’s an honor and pleasure to walk them and watch them grow and succeed.”

Those who are able to participate in the baby bottle drive can pick one up before, during or after Mass at St. Anne (Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. and Sundays at 8 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.) or by calling the parish office at 839-4857 to make arrangements to pick one up.

Spring sale

First Parish Church at 1 Church St. will host a book, bake and plant sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22. CDC guidelines will be followed.

50 years ago

Mr. and Mrs. Burleigh Loveitt of Gray Road in Gorham returned from a 10-day trip to Missouri to visit their son and daughter-in-law, Burleigh H. and Deborah Alden Loveitt, after the younger Burleigh completed his second year at the University of Missouri’s School of Veterinary Medicine, the American Journal reported May 19, 1971.

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service reported on May 13 that the U.S. public debt was $28,138,407,466,415.05.
