Eugene Harold McCool

GRANBURY, Texas – Eugene Harold McCool passed away on Saturday, April 24 2021, at the age of 85 after several months of declining health. Gene was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on June 26, 1935 to father Eugene McCool and mother Ethel Cobert McCool. The oldest of nine children, Gene grew up on Knickerbocker Avenue in Brooklyn. Gene joined the United States Navy and served in the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea. He was awarded a European Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Ribbon. He was honorably discharged in 1956.Returning back to New York after his service, Gene took a job working for United Parcel Service. He married Marge, the love of his life on March 2, 1957. In 1973, the family moved to Greenville. For the next 15 years, they resided in Maine. When they got tired of the cold winters, they moved to Port Charlotte, Fla. and then on to Granbury, Texas. Gene loved the hot Texas sun and spent many days tending to his rose bushes. Gene was always known as the life of the party and could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. He will definitely be missed for his gift of gab. Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marge; and his children Kathryn and Michael.He is survived by his children Eugene, Lynne, Thomas and wife Rose, Maureen and husband Chris; Grandchildren Barbara, Samantha, Angie, Valarie, Melissa, Thomas, Matthew, Megan, Rachel; and nine great-grand-children. Gene’s family would like to thank the medical team at Lake Granbury Medical Center for their care and compassion in the last few days of his life. They would also like to thank all of his friends at the American Legion who made the last few years filled with people he considered family. A very special thank you to Rhonda Cotton and Wade Hickman for all you did for Gene. He loved you like you were his own. A celebration of life will be held in Granbury, Texas on Wednesday, May 19 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The celebration will be at the American Legion Post 491 located at 3409 Davis Road in Granbury, Texas. All are invited to attend. A graveside service will be held at Arlington Cemetery, 720 Roosevelt Trail in Windham on Monday, May 24 at 3 p.m. All are invited to attend.
