Edward E. Ulrich
WINDHAM – Edward E. Ulrich died at home on May 25, 2021. Born in Seymour, Conn. on May 8, 1929, to Julius and Mary Kaslo Ulrich.
Edward graduated from Seymour High in 1947. After graduation, he hitchhiked to Oregon and California to visit relatives, returning to Connecticut a couple of years later. He entered Collegiate Prep in New Haven, Conn. Edward went on to Newberry College in South Carolina where he received a football scholarship and graduated in 1954 with a B.S. degree history and physical education. He returned to Connecticut with his wife and infant son where he gained employment with Winchester Arms Company in New Haven, Conn. His career at Winchester included various fields of the sporting arms industry.
Edward moved to Scarborough, Maine to expand Winchester’s presence in Northern New England and the Maritime provinces. Edward was also sent to Florida to build Trap and Skeet gun clubs in some southern states, he always maintained that the clubs were 20 years ahead of their time. After returning to Connecticut, he then worked for a number of years at Seymour Copper Mill in sales and marketing. He also ran his own gun store in Seymour, Conn. During this time, he divorced and later met Alexandra (Sandra) Burt. In late 1972 the two were passengers in a plane crash that left both with debilitating painful injuries. They were hospitalized for two months. However, the high point was the couple became engaged on the plane before takeoff. Edward presented the ring in a glass of champagne. They married in 1974. Their marriage spanned 47 years.
Edward’s love of the outdoors started as a boy, he fished from a young age as well as hunted when he was a little older, he built a hot-rod which he raced on a dirt track. When it came to working as a teenager he never lacked for jobs. Included milking cows, picking apples and pruning the trees, working in construction, and raising turkeys for Thanksgiving. While in Oregon, he worked on this uncle’s chicken farm and worked as a Linesman. Edward was a member of the Masonic Hiram Lodge 180 for 60-years. In spite of the plane crash injuries, two heart attacks and heart surgery he continued to live the life he wanted and did not lose a step. A great deal of credit for Edward’s long life can be directly attributed to his dedication to his 20-plus years of gym workouts.
Edward and Sandra’s life together included a partnership in a Dodge auto dealership, spending time fishing in Sebago Lake, Jupiter, Fla., and the Bahamas. Over a period of many years, Edward wrote articles for The Double Gun Journal based on his expertise of the Winchester Model-21.
Edward is survived by his wife, Alexandra; son, Robert and wife Elaine, Linda Burt, Ronald Burt and wife Pamela; grandchildren Melissa, Michelle and husband Joe Leveillee, Joey Racan, Jimmy Brady, Zachary and Travis Burt; and four great-grandchildren.
Edward was always extremely grateful to the medical practitioners and their staff who have taken care of him over the past 40 years.
A “Celebration of Edward’s Life” will take place in Connecticut with extended family and friends at the convenience of the family.
