Gerard Lamontagne

SANFORD – Gerard Lamontagne, 97, of Sanford, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2021, at his home, Enclave of Scarborough, Maine. He was born in Sanford, Maine on June 8, 1924, the son of Adelard and Blanche Lamontagne. He was a carpenter and a cabinet maker. When he turned 18, he went directly over-seas and served in the US Army for 3.5 years in the Aleutian Islands. Throughout his life he promoted and preserved the Franco- American history, supported his local community, particularly its elderly and cherished his role as a husband. Gerard helped restore and repair several items on display at the Franco- American Genealogy Society and built the display cases. He also donated numerous photographs of Franco Americans living and working in the Sanford area. He also wrote a weekly article for the local paper, depicting the lives and work of the Franco Americans.

He studied his genealogy and traced the Lamontagne family history back to 1590. He researched names and collected newspaper articles and clippings and cataloged chronologically over 600 pages of information dating back to 1895.

An altruist to his core, Gerard contacted several local property owners asking permission to restore the old and neglected family farmers cemeteries in the area. This work consisted of removing overgrown brush and vines and reconstructing stone fences, gates, tomb stones and cleaned them so that names were visible again.

Gerard and Sally were married in 1947 and were avid gardeners and had a garden every year they owned their farm which was over 66 years. They harvested and donated boxes of fresh vegetables annually to the church fairs and food kitchens.

Gerard achieved the Highest Gold Level in roller skating dance and became an instructor. He was a member of the Union of St John the Baptist, the Sanford- Springvale Historical Committee and the local VFW.
