Herman L. Abbott

SHAPLEIGH – Herman L. Abbott, 75, of Rose Corner of Shapleigh, passed peacefully on Jan. 12, 2022, at Southern Maine Heath Care in Biddeford.

Herman was born on Jan. 15, 1946, the son of Leslie H. and Katherine Abbott of Shapleigh.

He graduated from Sanford High School, class of 1964 and then from Southern Maine Vocational and Technical Institute, where he received a degree in machine tool technology.

After graduating, Herm served in the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam War and received an honorable discharge.

Herm’s employment included Maremont of Saco and Pratt and Whiney of North Berwick. He also owned a machine shop/repair facility at Ross Corner in Shapleigh.

Herman was a founding member of the Ross Corner Fire Company and got others to join and to build the fire station. He later served as Fire Chief for five years.

Herm was a local historian and a storyteller. He enjoyed entertaining others wit and wisdom. He also helped people in need of his mechanical and machining skills.

Herman was predeceased by his wife Judy.

Survivors include siblings Nancy (Jack) Pike Webb, Shirley Sheesley, Jean Abbott, and Timothy Abbott; along with nephews Robert (Sherry) Thomas and Adam Sheesley.

A graveside service will be held in the spring and will be announced.
