Jane E. (Bragdon) Shaw

PORTLAND – Jane E. Shaw passed away peacefully on Jan. 17, 2022 at the age of 98.

She was married to Carl F. Shaw for 63 years. She was the mother of nine children, grandmother of 22, great-grandmother of 22, and great-great-grandmother of one.

She was born in Westbrook, in April 1923 to Victoria (Harvey) and Harold Bragdon and graduated from Westbrook schools. She worked at SD Warren in the Cost Dept. before marrying Carl in 1947. In 1949 they moved to the North Deering section of Portland where they raised their family and lived for 35 years before moving to their home on Sebago Lake.

Jane enjoyed being surrounded by those she loved and was especially fond of the relaxing summer lifestyle at their place on the lake that they called Reven Enola (Never Alone) where family and friends enjoyed boat rides, sing-alongs and sharing time together. Jane was a wonderful hostess and the camp was the place where everyone wanted to be.

She was a devoted wife, a loving mother and a caring friend. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed making cookies and other “goodies” for her children and their friends daily.

An intelligent woman of many interests, she helped her husband Carl with his business for many years and also loved the challenge of new projects. She enjoyed quilting, ceramics and continued to knit into her 90s. Her crafts are still enjoyed and appreciated by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She felt that her greatest achievement, and the one that made her the happiest, was her family. She instilled a strong work ethic, sense of self sufficiency and a love of the simple pleasures in all her children and always put their well-being first.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Carol Shaw-Bourgeois and husband George, Deborah Shaw and husband Peter Ayer, Carl and wife Catherine, Elizabeth Patterson and husband Mark, Linda Harron (late husband Robert), Thomas and wife Jane, John and wife Eileen, Susan Hight and husband Jeffrey, Joseph and partner Karen Macleod, and their families. She is also survived by her sister, Elaine Robinson.

Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild are grateful for the years they have had with her, they will miss her generous spirit, easy smile and infectious laugh. They were blessed to have had her in their lives for so many years.

Jane is predeceased by her loving husband, Carl; and son-in-law, Robert Harron; and also her brothers George, Harvey, William and John Bragdon; and Carl’s brothers and sisters Florence Foley, Rita Walsh, Robert Shaw and Arthur Shaw.

Jane was a source of inspiration for all those who knew her. She will be remembered with thoughts of love and appreciation and will forever be in the hearts of all who knew her.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Jane on Saturday, April 2 at Dimillo’s On the Water, 25 Long Wharf, Portland, from 12 to 3 p.m.
