Holm Nilsen Fielding

SCARBOROUGH – It is with heartbroken sorrow that we share the loss of Holm Nilsen Fielding, of Pleasant Hill Road, who passed away to be with our Lord on Feb. 1, 2022, at his home.Holm was born in Scarborough on July 23, 1922, the son of Magna O. Nilsen and William J. Fielding. He attended Scarborough school and graduated from Scarborough High School in 1940.He graduated from Aircraft Mechanic School and worked in the South Portland shipyard at the beginning of WWII building liberty ships. He worked from the Army Air Corps in Bangor and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 as an aviation machinist, serving in Air Fleet Wing 7, Squadron VB 103. He was first stationed in Newfoundland then in St Eval RAF Command Station and Dunkeswell in England.He returned to Hutchinson, Kan. and while on leave he married Alice E. Purington on July 18, 1944. Alice and “Nelson” were happily married 75 years.Among his many interests, he was quite active in Boy Scouts and played the saxophone for high school dances. He loved riding motorcycles and was a passionate aviator. He was a member of the William King Masonic Lodge in Scarborough and was a member of the First Congregational Church in Scarborough.He worked for Northeast Motors as a mechanic and learned the cabinet trade with Paulsen Cabinet Works. He opened his own cabinet works in the mid 1950s. He was a master craftsman, building furniture with his son, John, well into his 90s.Survivors include his five children, Susan Fielding of Scarborough, Karen and her husband David Crovetti of Campbellsport, Wis., Elizabeth and her husband Francis Amoroso of Saco, Joan and her husband William Moulton of Falmouth and John Fielding of Scarborough. Additionally, he was blessed to have six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 14 at the First Congregational Church, Black Point Road, Scarborough. A private interment will be held in the spring at Black Point Cemetery.The family would like to thank Erika, Jay and Tom of Hospice of Southern Maine for their loving care.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Westbrook Animal Refuge League or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
