Robert Gerard Rooney of Kennebunk, died peacefully at his home on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2022, at the age of 82 surrounded by his family. He was a longtime resident of Stow, Massachusetts, Nahant, Massachusetts, and Kennebunk.

Robert graduated from Boston College, class of 1961, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. After two years of active duty and five years in the reserves he left the Army with the rank of captain. He taught for 15 years in the Acton-Boxborough school system as chairman of the Math Department of the junior high school. In addition, he and his wife ran a swim club on Lake Boone in Stow (Boone Cove) for over 20 years. Following that he began a successful career of 20-plus years in the technology industry.

He returned to teaching at the end of his career when he went to work teaching teachers how to use technology in the classroom. He and Sally then retired to Kennebunk to live near the ocean they both loved.

Robert was a quiet and gentle man but he also loved to have fun. He was the fun uncle that all the nieces and nephews (18 of them) adored. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a wonderful loving and caring man and he will be greatly missed.

Robert leaves behind his wife, Sara (Sally) Manning Rooney of 60 years; as well as son Robert Patrick Rooney and wife Corinne of London, son Peter Francis Rooney and wife Michelle of Methuen Massachusetts, and daughter Diana Marie Rooney of Watertown, Massachusetts. He was blessed with six grandchildren, Samuel Patrick, Juliette Anne, Isabella Marie, Devon Patrick, Alianna Sophia and Caitlyn Ann. He is also survived by his niece Julie Ann Bigge of Waterville, Maine.

A memorial service in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022, at Bibber Memorial Chapel, 67 Summer St., Kennebunk, ME 04043 at noon. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Masks are required.
