Makayla Bisulca

SOUTH PORTLAND – A loving mother and advocate for the dignity of others, Makayla (Bisulca) Faulkner unexpectedly passed away in her South Portland apartment on Feb. 8, 2022, at the age of 24. She is survived by her two young sons, James and Jackson; and husband, Corey Faulkner.

As a caring mother, Makayla had planted roots in her home state creating a stable environment for her two sons. The unconditional love between Makayla and her sons gave her the desire and courage to create a better life for her and her children. Her family is proud of her accomplishments and her motherly touch will be greatly missed.

Prior to becoming a mother, her life was full of diversity and spontaneity. She has lived independently in Los Angeles, Boston and Portland, Maine. Her adventures in the America’s range from French camp in Montreal, Canada to volunteering in Guatemala with Masons on a Mission. In between her trips to Central America, Makayla also explored much of Europe. In her travels she was a guest in Spain at the same estate that Ernest Hemmingway frequented, enjoyed the Summer Solstice in Norway, watched the running of the bulls in the Azores, and her most favorite trip of all, eating gelato with her cousins in Sicily. It didn’t matter that they spoke in different languages, they still laughed and connected the way all cousins do. Makayla spent a life immersed in various cultures and she was able to see the diversity within each of us and celebrate it.

Although Makayla enjoyed the busy life of large cities, she would always come home for a check-in with Mother Nature. She spent every winter her entire youth at Sunday River training with Junior Professionals, Snowboarding, and her summers on Maine lakes and rivers. Growing up in the Maine woods, it becomes a part of you, and for Makayla it was the place where she found peace and balance.

Makayla was also an intelligent and clever woman. Her natural abilities in math at times left her math professor grandmother speechless. That same ability applied to music, both in performing and in writing. The instruments she played include the violin, piano, saxophone, and steel drums, all played with absolute passion.

Makayla’s most spectacular trait, and what made so many people love her, was her advocacy for the dignity and well-being of others. She was the first to stand up to bullies and the first to touch your heart. Makayla made the difference for many when they couldn’t find their voice.

Connected to her Penobscot heritage, Makayla did complete her journey to Mt. Katahdin to honor her ancestors. May they guide her on her current journey.

We will be gathering on February 26th at 1pm to Celebrate the Life of Makayla (Biscula) Faulkner. Everyone who shared a connection with Makayla is welcome to join us at the Sahara Club, 57 Ashmont St., Portland, Maine 04103.
