NEW YORK — Yankees pitcher Luis Severino was placed on the 15-day injured list Thursday, one day after leaving his start against Cincinnati because of right shoulder tightness.

Severino had an MRI that showed a low-grade strain to his right latissimus dorsi muscle. Before the team even announced the test results, Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged it was likely the right-hander would miss some time.

It’s the first real hiccup this season for a terrific rotation that’s remained almost entirely healthy – a huge reason the Yankees have built the best record in baseball with a few days left before the All-Star break.

Gerrit Cole, Nestor Cortes, Jameson Taillon, Severino and Jordan Montgomery combined to start 84 of the club’s first 88 games.

New York reinstated reliever Jonathan Loaisiga from the 15-day injured list. The right-hander had been sidelined since May 23 because of shoulder inflammation.

The team also selected right-hander Ryan Weber to the major league roster from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Severino is 5-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 86 innings. He’s made 16 starts after missing most of the past three seasons because of injuries.

The Yankees reacquired utility player Tyler Wade from the Los Angeles Angels for a player to be named later or cash.

Wade was assigned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

FREDDY FREEMAN’S former agent and his company sued a radio host for libel, alleging Doug Gottlieb falsely claimed Casey Close never informed the first baseman of the Atlanta Braves’ last contract offer.

Close and Excel Sports Management filed the suit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. They accused Gottlieb of “false, disparaging and derogatory” comments in a tweet they claimed was made “in a grossly irresponsible manner without due consideration for the standards of information gathering and dissemination ordinarily followed by responsible parties.”

Close has represented several hundred baseball players, including Hall of Famer Derek Jeter.

Gottlieb is affiliated with Fox Sports, the Pac-12 Network and CBS Sports, according to the suit.

ALL-STAR GAME: Texas shortstop Corey Seager replaced Toronto outfielder George Springer on the roster for next week’s All-Star Game.

Springer has been bothered by a sore right elbow since late June, though he was in the Blue Jays’ starting lineup for Thursday night’s game against Kansas City.

“Our team comes first,” Springer said. “This is something I’ve been managing for a while. It’s four or five days of extremely valuable time to let this thing rest and get ready to go for the second half.”

REDS: Mike Moustakas was placed on the injured list without an injury designation, an indication the move was likely related to COVID-19 protocols.

The team recalled infielder/outfielder Max Schrock from Triple-A Louisville before its series finale against the New York Yankees.

GUARDIANS: Starter Aaron Civale was placed on the 15-day injured list with a sprained right wrist after pitching one inning in Wednesday night’s loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Civale, who spent time earlier this season on the IL with a strained glute muscle, threw 20 pitches before leaving the game. Manager Terry Francona said he’s been dealing with a wrist issue for some time.

THURSDAY’S GAMES

MARLINS 3, PIRATES 2: Brian Anderson atoned for a costly error with a two-run triple in the 11th inning, and Miami won at home.

Anderson was hit by a pitch from reliever Wil Crowe (3-6), but the Pirates successfully challenged, saying it hit his bat first, resulting in a foul ball. Anderson then sent a drive to deep right center that scored Jesús Aguilar and Avisaíl García.

ROCKIES 8, PADRES 5: Randal Grichuk doubled twice and drove in three runs, C.J. Cron had two hits in his return to the starting lineup from a wrist injury, and Colorado won in Denver.

GUARDIANS 4, TIGERS 0: Triston McKenzie struck out a career-high 12 and extended his scoreless streak to 21 innings, leading Cleveland to a win at home.

McKenzie (7-6) pitched eight dominant innings, giving up five singles and walking none.

BRAVES 5, NATIONALS 4: Kyle Wright earned his 11th victory to tie the major league lead, and Atlanta won at Washington.

Michael Harris II, Matt Olson and Dansby Swanson homered for Atlanta, which has won five of its last seven. The Braves improved to 8-2 against the Nationals this season.

Juan Soto extended his hitting streak to 16 games for Washington, which has dropped seven in a row and 13 of 14. The Nationals have the worst record in the majors and fell to 7-34 against the NL East.

ROYALS 3, BLUE JAYS 1: Double-A callup Angel Zerpa pitched five innings to win for the first time as a big league starter, Bobby Witt Jr. hit a tiebreaking home run and depleted Kansas City overcame the absence of 10 unvaccinated players to win at Toronto.

Fellow callup Nate Eaton hit his first career homer as the Royals won for the fifth time in six games.

DODGERS 4, CARDINALS 0: Tyler Anderson pitched six shutout innings, Gavin Lux hit a two-run homer and Los Angeles won at St. Louis.

Anderson (10-1) scattered three hits, struck out four and walked two while needing just 88 pitches to get through six innings. It was the first career victory against St. Louis for Anderson, who entered 0-2 with a 7.90 ERA in three previous starts, all as a member of the Colorado Rockies.

REDS 7, YANKEES 6: Joey Votto lined a tiebreaking double in a three-run 10th inning for his second go-ahead hit of the night, and Cincinnati took two of three at New York.
