After a two-year hiatus, Freeport Community Services is bringing back Community Day. It will be held August 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be lawn games and free kids’ activities hosted by local businesses and organizations. Free lunch will be provided and there will be an all-ages friendly Bingo game.

Community Day will also allow Regional School Unit 5 families to receive donated back-to-school items, including backpacks donated by L.L. Bean and school supplies by Midcoast Federal Credit Union.

Community members who would like to donate additional school supplies can do so at FCS at 53 Depot Street in Freeport.

“Getting everything kids need for school can be an expensive proposition,” Freeport Community Services’ Director of Programs Mike Tausek said. “Backpacks, school supplies, new clothes can be out of reach for families living paycheck to paycheck or parents on a fixed income. Community Day is a fun way to make sure all the students in our community have access to what they need to start the year off right.”

This year, some of those families will include asylum seekers currently living in emergency shelters in Freeport.

“It’s always so much fun to gather together for lawn games, ice cream, and pizza,” Freeport Community Services Executive Director Sarah Lundin said. “We can’t wait to see all the familiar faces and welcome some of our newest neighbors.”
