Things heated up in July, at least with regard to the temperature, and then, just like that, the last week heading into the last month of our too-short summer things cooled off a bit, and July reminded us that fall is barreling toward us. Not to worry too much though, there is still some summer to enjoy.

Here at Libby Library, we are still enjoying our Summer Reading Programs, for all ages. Adults are bringing in their bingo sheets and collecting their ocean-themed charms, and kids are completing reading logs and filling their necklaces with multi-colored Read Beads. From what is being shared here at the front circulation desk, folks are really enjoying the experience of exploring new books and getting rewarded. Reading is reward enough, but, boy, is it fun to also get a treat for having finished a great book. The last day, technically, for the kid’s program is Aug. 12, and then, to celebrate all of that fantastic reading, the Children’s Summer Reading Party will take place Aug. 20 at noon. Join us for some fun activities, yummy snacks, and a Treasure Hunt! Pirate costumes highly encouraged (or any costumes for that matter).

As the weather cools and the summer wanes, change is in the air. All of the following developments will kick-off the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, Sept. 6. First, the library will be expanding hours of operation. We will be open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Staff will be available to answer phones or emails from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. In addition, curbside pick-up will be by request only.

Otherwise, all Hold Items will be available for pick-up inside the library, which will be extra nice for us librarians, who very much enjoy seeing all of your smiling faces. Lastly, the restrictions on use of the Community Room will be lifted.

Just when you thought you knew everything the library had to offer, we utter that notorious infomercial phrase “But wait! There’s more!” In addition to all of the books, CDs, DVDs, print magazines and newspapers, we offer a large assortment of digital content on our website, accessible from anywhere you happen to be. Notably, through the Digital Maine Library, accessible via the Library’s home page, patrons can access newspapers from all over the country. Click on the Digital Resources tab on our menu bar, then click Free Digital Resources in the drop-down and choose Newspapers from the center “resource type” options. You’ll then have databases such as U.S. Newsstream, the Wall Street Journal, Newsstand and Maine News, to name a few, at your fingertips. Interested in learning a new language?

Check out Pronunciator, also on our digital resources page. Choose between short, daily lessons; structured drills, quizzes, and audio lessons; and learning guides featuring longer courses and interactive grammar lessons. For our comic book aficionados, we have ComicBook-Plus, a digital database which includes a variety of graphic novels and popular comics. Happiness is a stack of unread library books by the bed, but these days there’s a lot more on offer at your local library.

We would still love to hear from the homeschooling community about how we can better serve you.

We are interested in providing programming and resources to help you on your journey. Fill out the survey on our website, and/or stop by and let us know how we can help.

As our friend, Arthur Read, reminds us, “Having fun isn’t hard, when you’ve got a library card!” And we would like to remind our community that all Old Orchard Beach property owners, residents, and full or part-time employees of year-round businesses are eligible for a free library card. Stop by and check ‘it’ out.
