Laura Jean Mayes

LEWISTON – Laura Jean Mayes, 47, of Lewiston, passed away in the morning of Sept. 29, 2022 in Freeport as she about to depart from work for home. Laura was born on 25 Sept. 25, 1975 at the Naval Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. to Gladys E Jones of Pearl River, NY and Larry W Mayes of Camp Kilmer, NJ and San Antonio, Texas.

She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1993 and attended UMA Augusta, becoming Student Advisor at the Lewiston Campus. She often found employment assisting Senior Citizens in obtaining benefits or rendering care at various locations in Androscoggin and Cumberland Counties, often placing patient safety as paramount in all she did. She was last employed at Comfort Suites/44N Hotel in Freeport.

Laura had been a member and held notable positions in International Rainbow for Girls in Bath and had been a member of Eastern Star in Lewiston. She is survived by her parents; her sister Debra Gould, husband Paul and their daughter Andrea of Oak Harbor, Wash.; and her sister Jennifer Campbell, nephew Bretton Campbell and niece Bethany Campbell of Lewiston. Laura was predeceased by her grandparents Kenneth Q and Gladys A Jones of Pearl River, NY and Eugene S and Rosie Mae Byram Mayes of San Antonio, Texas. Laura had another love in her life in her Pug, Bumblebee, who is ailing at 13 and soon to join Laura together forever. Laura was also a 9th great-granddaughter of Priscilla Mullins of the Mayflower.

While disabled and able to walk only short distances, Laura found the enthusiasm, energy and time to devote to officiating Maine Roller Derby (MRD) out of Portland, Maine and Casco Bay Derby (CBRD). As “Coconutz Chanel” in the Derby world, Laura was devoted to the sport as they met in Women’s and Men’s matches and tournaments throughout New England and many locations coast to coast to coast where tournaments included US and International teams as they gathered in the spirit of friendly competition. She also loved watching Figure Skating and Gymnastics when she could. An avid Seamstress and Knitter, she created Ball Gowns to various garments for herself and others including a special capes for members Roller Derby who achieved game milestones.

Time and date of Services have not yet been determined, but will be Private as of this posting.
