Anne O. Gilbert

WESTBROOK – Anne O. Gilbert of Westbrook passed away peacefully on Oct. 13, 2022, at home with family by her side. Anne was born March 18, 1932, in Fort Edward, N.Y.

She married her college sweetheart, Larry Gilbert, in June 1954, the day after graduating from Providence-Barrington Bible College. Anne and Larry moved to southern Maine in 1957, when Larry became pastor of the Little Falls Baptist Church. After Larry became Chaplain at the Windham Correctional Center, they moved to West Falmouth. Anne poured all of her energy into raising their son Dana, and daughter Eunice.

As the children grew older, Anne spent several years teaching church school. Using her own expertise, Anne developed a church school curriculum. She first wrote for David C. Cook Co., and then started her own business, Creative Curriculum, a nondenominational church curriculum used across the United States.

Throughout her life, Anne was an active church volunteer, teaching Sunday School and organizing church fairs. In addition to her activities at church, Anne had many hobbies including hooking rugs, sewing, gardening, cooking and baking. She was a friend to many people and always willing to help out.

Anne was predeceased by her parents Mary and Dan O’Hanlon; siblings Mary Bogard, James O’Hanlon, and Joyce (Richard) Wandell.

Anne is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Larry; brother John O’Hanlon and wife Jean; son Dana Gilbert and wife Joanie, daughter Eunice and husband George Bentley; grandchildren, Tommy, Bobby and wife Graicie Van Spankeren, and Ellen Gilbert; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Anne’s family would like to thank her caregiver, Emily, as well as the staff from Beacon Hospice who guided her through her journey.

Memorial Service for Anne will be Dec. 10, 2 p.m. at State Street Church, 159 State Street, Portland, ME 04101
