Helene B. Thomas 1942 – 2022 PHIPPSBURG – Helene B. Thomas, 79, of Phippsburg, passed away in her home unexpectedly on Sept. 15, 2022. She was born in Jersey City, N.J., where she taught elementary school for 12 years. She then continued her teaching career for 21 more years in Maine at Harpswell Community School. Helene was a graduate of Rutgers University where she earned her teaching degree. Her passion for music led her to become a church organist for 40 years and a piano teacher for 30 years. Helene was an officer-organist and resolute member of Phippsburg Congregational Church. Along with church, volunteering was a significant part of Helene’s life. Her hobbies included gardening, keeping a clean and welcoming home and caring for her pets. To foster her love for animals, she adopted her dogs from the Coastal Humane Society. Helene was a truly generous person. She was adored by her family, students, friends, and the community. Predeceased by her was her soul mate and best friend, Charlie Thomas, (2003); her mother, Edna Schiller, her father, Herbert Pflaum; her sister, Ann Jewett (2015); her nephew, David Jewett (1989) and her nephew, Shawn Michael Jude Mayerik. Helene also lost her beloved dogs, Luv and Chance. Helene is survived by her twin brother, Robert Pflaum and sister-in-law, Gail Patricia Pflaum of Basking Ridge, N.J.; her nephew and godson, Christopher R. Pflaum of Manalapan, N.J., her niece, Wendy Pflaum Sherman of Rockville Md., her grandnephew, Michael Sherman of Rockville, Md.; her niece, Joy Birdsong of Slidell, La., her nephew, Glenn Jewett of Washington, Mo., her nephew, Dale Johanson of Wichita, Kan., her nephew, Bruce Jewett of Hamilton, Ohio, her nephew Scott Jewett of Derby, Kan., and her niece and goddaughter, Brenda Helene Ogrodnick of Cape Coral, Fla.; her closest and dearest friends include Leigh M. Preston of Phippsburg, Judie Lemong of Brunswick; her minister, Mark Wilson of Waitsfield, Vt. and her loyal companion and handyman, George Staples of Bath.
