Douglas L. Dalrymple

SCARBOROUGH – Douglas L. Dalrymple, formerly of Cape Elizabeth, Orr’s Island and Green Valley, Ariz., passed away on Oct. 29, 2022 at Holbrook Health Center at Piper Shores at the age of 90.

Doug was born Feb. 29, 1932 to George and Enid Dalrymple in Needham, Mass. After attending Needham schools and graduating Needham High School in 1950, Doug attended Northeastern University on a basketball scholarship and graduated in June 1955 with a B.S. in Business Administration. After graduating, Doug enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in France until discharged in July 1957.

Doug was predeceased by his wife, Carole (Gaysunas) Dalrymple, whom he married on Aug. 17, 1957. They were blessed with four children.

Doug began working in insurance for New England Life in Boston, Mass. in 1958 and opened a new claims office in Cleveland, Ohio in 1959. He joined Union Mutual as a regional claim manager in 1962 in Boston, Mass. and then was promoted and moved to Portland in 1966 and served in various executive roles until retiring in 1992 after 30 years with UNUM. Doug was involved in many insurance and health care organizations, such as the Health Insurance Association of America, the Maine Health Information Center, and he was very involved in various charitable organizations, including 20 years of service with the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention program.

Doug found great pleasure in attending his children’s and grandchildren’s athletic events. He could always be seen and heard either on the fields, in the gym or at the pool. His enjoyment shifted to softball in later years with the birth of his grandchildren Allie and Sarah, then back to soccer and basketball with PJ and Phoebe and finally to football with his great-grandson, Daniel.

Doug and the family spent many summers on Brandy Pond in Naples developing lifelong friendships, boating, golfing and entertaining friends and family.

Doug derived great pleasure from his family. He and Carole were married 60 years and were fortunate to travel the globe. He was especially fond of Nova Scotia, New Zealand and Scotland.

Surviving are his four children, Susan Hendrix of Scarborough, Scott Dalrymple of Sweden, Kim Dalrymple Rovzar (Michael Woodside) of Bridgton, and Paul Dalrymple (Lisa) of Waddell, Ariz.; his grandchildren Allie Hendrix of Pennsylvania, Sarah Hendrix of Scarborough, PJ and Phoebe Dalrymple of Waddell, Ariz., Emma and Ethan Peavey of Raymond; his great-grandchild, Daniel Sargent of Scarborough, and his companion, Elizabeth Wagner.
