Dr. Edward A. Greco Jr.

SCARBOROUGH – Dr. Edward A. Greco Jr., 91, of Scarborough, died peacefully at home with his loving family by his side.

Dr. Greco was born in Portland on Sept. 10, 1931. He was the son of the late Dr. Edward A. Greco, Sr., and Katherine R. (Rasmussen) Greco. Edward was raised in Portland and was a graduate of Cheverus High School class of 1949. After graduation, Edward attended Georgetown University earning a Bachelor of Science degree. After college, Edward was drafted into the United States Army serving from 1953 to 1955. While in the Army and stationed in Colorado, he met the love of his life and best friend, Rose Ilene (Burtis) Greco.

Edward and Rose married in 1955. After his discharge from the Army, he and Rose moved to Burlington, Vt. where Edward attended the University of Vermont Medical School. Upon completion of his medical education and training, specializing in cardiology, Edward returned to Maine to practice medicine with his father, Dr. Edward A. Greco, Sr. He and his father were also staff physicians at Mercy Hospital in Portland. Edward was a cardiologist at Mercy for more than 50 years. Through the entirety of Edward’s medical career, Rose was his life partner who managed his medical office and advocated for his patient’s care. Edward fully retired from medicine in 2010.

Edward enjoyed fly fishing and hunting. For over 40 years he would make an annual trip to Colorado to hunt, fish and visit family. He was skilled at tying flies and at making fly rods. He was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed the beauty of nature. In later years Edward enjoyed woodworking projects with his grandsons. Throughout his life he was an avid reader.

Edward and Rose were devout Catholics and communicants of Holy Cross Church in South Portland. He will be remembered by his family and friends as a gentle, thoughtful and soft-spoken man of few words with a kind heart.

Dr. Edward A. Greco, Jr., was predeceased by his wife, Rose Greco in 2012.

He is survived by two sons, Edward A. Greco, III and his wife Anita Greco of South Carolina, and Thomas J. Greco and his wife Sally Williams of Biddeford; four daughters, Jude Greco of Nevada, Louisa Greco and her husband Quinbert Tsi of Montreal, Canada, Katherine and James Troiano of South Portland, and Christine and Joseph Caresio of Mo.; one stepdaughter, Carol Flanigan of Arizona; and nine grandchildren, Jennifer Rose Flannigan, Phillip Greco, Ryan Greco, Stefani Greco, Nicholas Troiano, Sam Troiano, Joseph Caresio, John Caresio, and Vivian Rose Caresio; four great-grandchildren, Jayden Rose Flannigan, Evalina Rose Matos, Sebastian Greco, and Lucas Greco.

Visiting hours celebrating Dr. Edward A. Greco Jr.’s life will be held on Thursday, Nov. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland, prayers will be recited at 10:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Church 124 Cottage Rd., South Portland.
