WESTBROOK – Michael Matthew Kilmartin, 88, passed away in Westbrook following a brief illness.

Mike was born on August 4, 1934 to the late Euphrasia O’Connell and Matthew Kilmartin of Portland. Mike graduated from Portland High School and joined the Air Force in 1953. He was trained as a Radio Operator, and while stationed in Japan he intercepted Russian Morse Code transmissions.

After his discharge in 1957, he received an Associate’s Degree in Finance from Bentley College and started his professional career at Maine Medical Center in the role of Accounting Assistant. He was proud to note that his first job at MMC had been working in the kitchen with his mother, a dietician, when he was 15. While in the MMC Finance office, he spent several months in Boston with IBM to learn how to help install the hospital’s first computer. He later received a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration from the University of New Hampshire while continuing to work full time. After retiring from Maine Medical Center as Associate Vice President of Finance, Mike was asked to take on a short-term consultant role at the newly formed MaineHealth. He worked there part-time for the next 15 years as Assistant Treasurer.

In 1965, Mike married Anne Aube. They had a long and loving marriage and raised a close-knit family together. His favorite roles were that of husband, father, and grandfather. Mike missed his wife every day since her passing nearly four years ago. Michael believed in community service and was a member of various boards and charitable organizations over the years, most recently through his service to Konbit Sante. He volunteered at church bean suppers, food pantry drives, and numerous events as a Ham Radio communications volunteer. Mike’s training as a radio operator in the Air Force led to his life-long love of radio communications. He was an active member of the Portland Amateur Wireless Association and American Radio Relay League (his call sign was N1GRO). Mike was never idle. He was an avid reader and cooked most of the family’s favorite dishes. He loved to tell stories of growing up with his brothers and cousins in Portland. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family, especially his beloved grandsons. Every year he looked forward to attending Sea Dogs games, Westbrook Together Day, the Moxie Festival, Scarborough Downs races and other traditions he shared with his family.

Mike was predeceased by his wife, Anne; his brothers, Joseph and James, sister-in-law, Katherine (James) Kilmartin, and brother-in-law, Joseph Aube. He is survived by his daughters, Cathy and her husband Paul Krusiec of Portland, and Laura Kilmartin of Westbrook; grandsons, Matthew and Michael Krusiec; several nieces and nephews, cousins, dear friends and neighbors.

Visiting hours celebrating Mike’s life will be held on Friday, Nov. 18, 2022 from 4 – 7 p.m., at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland, Maine. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m., on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022 followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church, corner of Mellen and Sherman Street, Portland. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.
