Joan P. Rand

PORTLAND – Joan P. Rand, 73, of Cumberland, died Friday morning Nov. 18, 2022 at Maine Medical Center with family at her side after a fierce battle with metastatic lung cancer.

She was born in Lewiston on March 24, 1949, a daughter of the late Harry and Gloria (Castonguay) Goughnour. Joan was educated in local schools and remained a lifelong resident of this community. She had been living in Cumberland with her daughter and grandson since 2019.

On Aug. 17, 1991 she married the love of her life, Maynard Rand, who predeceased her on July 15, 2017.

Joan first worked in the local shoe shops of Lewiston and Auburn until she began a 24-year career with Dunkin’ Donuts. She spent most of those years in the Lewiston and Auburn stores and most recently worked in the Falmouth location, right up until September of this year. All of her customers adored her and knew her as “The DD Lady” or “JoJo.”

Among her favorite enjoyments in her free time were playing Beano/Bingo, going to the beach, camping, family get-togethers, and dining out, especially breakfast, at various diners with her grandson, Brady. She loved spending hours shopping with her daughter, Cindy, looking up to and wanting to dress just like her. Joan loved spending hours visiting and volunteering at her daughter and grandson’s small business, Foreside Nutrition in Falmouth. There, all of the girls (like everyone else she interacted with) knew her as “Gram.”

She was a huge Elvis Presley fan and enjoyed visiting Elvis’ Graceland estate in May of this year. Joan loved to travel, enjoying three trips to Hawaii and annual Disney trips with her grandson, Brady and daughter, Cindy. She was a loving, devoted and hardworking wife, mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed. She had the kindest smile that would instantly light up a room, and was the cornerstone to her small but close family.

She leaves behind her daughter, Cindy Whetzel, of Cumberland, her son, Larry Morin Jr., of Lewiston; three grandchildren, Brady Whetzel and girlfriend, Michelle Pelletier, of Cumberland, Krystina Gabrielski of Rumford and Brandi Morin of Sabattus; and her nephew, Christopher Therriault and his daughters Gabrielle and Alyssa of Lewiston.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband Maynard; her son, Scott; two brothers, Thomas and James Goughnour and sister, June Therriault.
