STANDISH – Howard “Moose” Mehlman, 84, a long-time resident of Millinocket, passed away in his sleep at the family lake house on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2022, following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Portland, on June 10, 1938, the son of Clifford A. and Marion Douglass Mehlman, and grew up in the Pine Point area of Scarborough, graduating from Scarborough High School. He attended University of Maine at Orono, graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering, then moved to West Virginia to work at West Virginia Pulp & Paper in Luke, Md. He returned to Maine with his wife Janice and daughter Carolyn, settling in Millinocket, where he worked in the engineering department of Great Northern Paper Co.
Howard was also a life-long firefighter. He began with Engine 4 in Pine Point, then helped establish the New Creek Volunteer Fire Co. in West Virginia, where he was selected fire chief. He retired from firefighting after many years with the Pioneer Hose Co. of Millinocket.
Howard was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting deer and partridge, fly-fishing for brookies, and ice fishing with his daughter for whatever would take the bait. He built his own canoe, tied his own flies, and loaded his own ammunition.
Howard is survived by Janice Batchelder Mehlman, his wife of 61 years; daughter Carolyn and her husband, Marc Jacques; sister Marilyn Burwell; nephew Charlie Burwell; niece Meredith Oestreicher, and many cousins.
Special thanks to the caregivers from FirstLight Home Care in Windham.
