Winter standouts named to all-star teams

Another winter sports season of triumph has come and gone and in its wake comes postseason honors.

As always, Forecaster Country featured an abundance of all-star honorees, across the board.

Here’s a full accounting:

Boys’ basketball

South Portland’s boys’ basketball team repeated as Class AA state champion and the Red Riots placed Gabe Galarraga and Jaelen Jackson on the Class AA South all-star first-team.

Scarborough’s D’Angelo Alston and South Portland’s Jayden Kim made the second-team.

Scarborough’s Liam Garriepy and Blake Harris were honorable mention selections.

Scarborough’s Carter Blanche and South Portland’s Manny Hidalgo made the Class AA South All-Rookie squad.

South Portland’s Jayden Kim was named to the Class AA South All-Defensive team.

In Class AA North, Cheverus senior Silvano Ismail and Portland senior Remijo Wani made the first-team.

Portland senior Pitia Donato was chosen for the second-team.

Cheverus senior Luke McNabb and junior Gio St. Onge, Deering sophomore Evan Legassey and Portland junior Jeissey Khamis were honorable mention selections.

Deering sophomores Justin Jamal and David Otti and Portland Drew Veilleux made the Class AA North All-Rookie team.

The Class AA North All-Defensive team included Cheverus’ Silvano Ismail and Portland’s Pitia Donato and senior Kennedy Charles.

Cheverus’ Silvano Ismail was named the Class AA North Player of the Year.

In Class A South, Judd Armstrong, of state runner-up Falmouth, was named the Player of the Year.

Falmouth’s Chris Simonds made the first-team.

Falmouth’s Lucas Dilworth was named to the second-team.

Falmouth’s Judd Armstrong was also named to the Class A South All-Defensive team.

In the Western Maine Conference, the boys’ Class A/B first-team included Greely’s Seamus Raftice and Yarmouth’s Stevie Walsh.

Cape Elizabeth’s Sam Lombardo, Freeport’s JT Pound and Greely’s Tyler Pettingill made the second-team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Owen Tighe and Yarmouth’s Evan Hamm were named to the third-team.

Freeport’s Connor Slocum and Greely’s Hayden MacArthur made the WMC Class A/B All-Defensive first-team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Andrew Trachimowicz and Yarmouth’s Evan Hamm made the second-team.

In Class C, Waynflete’s Matt Adey and Nico Kirby made the WMC first-team.

The second-team included North Yarmouth Academy’s Cal Nice and Moses Semuhoza.

NYA’s Wyatt Thomas and Waynflete’s Cole Isherwood made the WMC Class C All-Defensive team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Sam Lombardo and Owen Tighe, Greely’s Hayden MacArthur, Tyler Pettingill and Seamus Raftice, NYA’s Cal Nice, Waynflete’s Matt Adey and Yarmouth’s Stevie Walsh took part in the WMC Senior All-Star Game. Greely’s Travis Seaver and Yarmouth’s Ilunga Mutombo served as coaches.

The WMC boys’ All-Academic team included Cape Elizabeth’s Heiki Kuhrt, Josh Lench and James Rickman, Freeport’s Logan Schulz, Waynflete’s Matt Adey, Charlie Dinapoli, Connor Ford, Satwan Hussein and Cole Isherwood and Yarmouth’s Nate Hagedorn and Liam Hickey.

Yarmouth’s Stevie Walsh won the Bob Butler Award as the Western Maine Conference’s top senior player/sportsman.

Falmouth’s Judd Armstrong, Greely’s Seamus Raftice and South Portland’s Jaelen Jackson represented the Class AA/A/B South team and Cheverus’ Silvano Ismail and Portland’s Pitia Donato and Remijo Wani played for the Class AA/A/B North squad in the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Game in Bangor. The North prevailed, 82-79,

Cheverus’ Silvano Ismail was a finalist for the Mr. Maine Basketball award, given to the state’s premier senior player. Falmouth’s Judd Armstrong was a semifinalist. Thornton Academy’s Will Davies was the recipient.

Girls’ basketball

Scarborough junior Caroline Hartley was one of the SMAA’s top girls’ basketball players this winter.

On the girls’ side, while Cheverus wasn’t able to repeat as Class AA state champion, the Stags did produce a pair of Class AA North first-team all-stars in junior standouts Maddie Fitzpatrick and Emma Lizotte.

Deering junior Maya Gayle was named to the second-team.

Cheverus junior Ruth Boles, Deering junior Natalie Santiago and Portland junior Emma Shaw and sophomore Baleria Yugu were honorable mentions.

Cheverus’ Maddie Fitzpatrick made the Class AA North All-Defensive team.

Cheverus’ freshman Jenna Jensen and Portland’s Emma Shaw were named to the Class AA North All-Rookie team.

Cheverus’ Madison Bunnell-Parker and Portland’s Eliza Stein qualified for the All-Academic team.

In Class AA South, Scarborough junior Caroline Hartley made the first-team.

Scarborough sophomore Emerson Flaker was named to the second-team.

South Portland senior Anna Brown and sophomore Emma Travis were honorable mention selections.

South Portland’s Emma Travis and freshman Caleigh Corcoran were named to the Class AA South All-Rookie team.

Scarborough’s Julia Black and Daisy Stone and South Portland’s Talia Bradbury qualified for the All-Academic team.

In Class A South, Falmouth senior Anna Turgeon and juniors Emily Abbott and Maddy Christman made the first-team.

Falmouth senior Katie Lozoraitis was a second-team selection.

Falmouth’s Maddy Christman and junior Justine Means made the Class A South All-Defensive team.

Falmouth’s Anna Turgeon and Sloane Ginevan qualified for the All-Academic team.

Falmouth’s Anna Turgeon was named Class A South Player of the Year.

In the WMC, seniors Sarah English and Angel Huntsman and junior Graca Bila of Class C South runner-up NYA were named to the Class C first-team.

Waynflete junior Lucy Hart made the second-team.

Freeport’s Angel Pillsbury and Greely’s Sophia Ippolito made the Class A/B second-team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Olivia Manning, Greely’s Asja Kelman and Yarmouth’s Neena Panozzo were named to the third-team.

Greely’s Kylie Crocker and Yarmouth’s Lauren Keaney made the WMC Class A/B All-Defensive team.

NYA’s Graca Bila and Angel Huntsman and Waynflete’s Lucy Hart were named to the WMC Class C All-Defensive team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Meghan Conley, Olivia Manning and Juliet Moore, Freeport’s Angel Pillsbury, Greely’s Cassidy Dean and Sophia Ippolito, NYA’s Sarah English, Charlotte Harper-Cunningham, Angel Huntsman and Madilyn Onorato and Yarmouth’s Delia MacDonald were named WMC Senior All-Stars.

Cape Elizabeth’s Meghan Conley, Olivia Manning, Juliet Moore and Ashley Ryer, Freeport’s Angel Pillsbury, Greely’s Addyson Babcock, Cassidy Dean, Sophia Ippolito and Allison Read, NYA’s Sarah English, Harper Fremont-Smith, Charlotte Harper-Cunningham, Josie Harper-Cunningham and Erin Reid, Waynflete’s Iris Stutzman and Yen Wilson and Yarmouth’s Delia MacDonald and Nori Schneider qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

NYA’s Angel Huntsman was named a finalist for the Bob Butler Award, which went to Old Orchard Beach’s Elise MacNair.

Falmouth’s Anna Turgeon, Greely’s Sophia Ippolito and South Portland’s Anna Brown played for the Class AA/A/B South team in the Maine McDonald’s Senior All-Star Game. Turgeon had a team-high 12 points in a 105-57 setback to the North.

NYA’s Sarah English and Angel Huntsman were named to the Class C/D South team. The South prevailed over the North, 64-50.

Cheverus’ Megan Dearborn and South Portland’s Anna Brown were finalists for the state-wide foul shooting competition.

Greely’s Cassidy Dean and Sophia Ippolito and Scarborough’s Julia Black and Daisy Stone qualified for the girls’ Academic All-State team.

Falmouth’s Anna Turgeon and NYA’s Angel Huntsman were semifinalists for the Miss Maine Basketball Award, which was won by Gardiner’s Lizzy Gruber.

Boys’ hockey

Cape Elizabeth’s Nick Laughlin was a first-team league all-star and a finalist for the Evans Spear Award this winter.

Cape Elizabeth’s Class B state champion boys’ hockey team placed senior defensemen Phil Coupe and Nick Laughlin on the Class B South all-star first team.

Cape Elizabeth senior forward Sebastian Moon and Cheverus/Yarmouth junior defenseman David Swift made the second-team.

Cape Elizabeth junior forward Colin Blackburn and senior goalie Charlie Garvin, Cheverus/Yarmouth senior forward Truman Peters and Greely junior forward Charlie Moore and junior defenseman Cullen Rafford were third-team selections.

Cape Elizabeth senior forward Connor Goss and Cheverus/Yarmouth junior forward Brian Connolly were honorable mentions.

Cape Elizabeth sophomore goalie Nathan Hanisko and Cheverus/Yarmouth sophomore forward Quinn McCoy and freshman defenseman Colby Carnes made the Class B South All-Rookie team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Nick Laughlin was named the Class B South Defenseman of the Year.

Cape Elizabeth’s Charlie Garvin was chosen the Class B South Goaltender of the Year.

Cape Elizabeth’s Jake Rutt was named the Class B South Coach of the Year.

Cape Elizabeth’s Nick Laughlin and Cheverus/Yarmouth’s Truman Peters were finalists for the Evans Spear Award, given to the outstanding senior player in Class B South. Gorham’s Jasper Crane was the winner.

The Class A All-State first-team featured Falmouth forwards Mitch Ham and Aaron Higgins, defenseman Caden Barnard and goalie Brandon White, Scarborough defenseman William Marcotte and forwards Roan Hopkins and Tobey Lappin and defenseman Richie Gilboy of the South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete co-op squad.

Falmouth forward Sam Belliveau and defenseman Zach Mitten, Scarborough forward Wyatt Grondin and defenseman Thomas Hassett and South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete defenseman Ian Wright made the second-team.

Girls’ hockey

Yarmouth/Freeport’s Sadie Carnes made the All-State team and won the Becky Schaffer award after leading her team to the state final for the first time.

The girls’ hockey all-state team featured forwards Lucy Johnson and Mikayla Talbot, defender Brynn McKenney and goalie Ella Lemieux of state champion Cheverus. They were joined by forwards Sadie Carnes and Rosie Panenka and defender Amanda Panciocco of state runner-up Yarmouth/Freeport, Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland forward Marina Bassett and defender Delaney Whitten and Portland/Deering defender Jane Flynn.

The South All-Conference team included Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland forward Libby Hooper, defender Hartson Mosunic and goalie Abbey Steinhagen, Cheverus forwards Elle Cooney, Maddie Doherty and Charlotte Miller, defenders Lily Johnson and Zoe Radford and goalie Ellie Skolnekovich and Falmouth/Scarborough defender Morgan Adams.

The North All-Conference team featured Yarmouth/Freeport forward Sophie Smith and defenders Adelaide Strout and Chloe White.

Yarmouth/Freeport’s Sadie Carnes won the Becky Schaffer Award as the state’s top senior player. Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland’s Delaney Whitten was a finalist.

Indoor track

Greely’s Lia Traficonte jumped her way on to the WMC girls’ all-star team.

The SMAA indoor track first-team included Nate Murray (junior shot put), Adam Bendetson (two-mile) and the 4×800 relay (Bendetson, Landen Springer, Joseph Cotta and Gavin Cote) of Class A champion Scarborough, Cheverus’ Dominic Cortez (pole vault) and Brendon Rogers (senior 400), Falmouth’s Kaleb Barrett (senior triple jump), open relay (Max Shapiro, Miles Gay, Jackson Boyd and Finn Caxton-Smith), 4×400 relay (Shapiro, Gay, Miles Woodbury and Caxton-Smith) and sprint relay (Boyd, Caxton-Smith, Gay and Woodbury), Portland’s Myles Hang (senior shot put), Charlie Jacques (junior 800) and Nathan Blades (senior 800 and mile) and South Portland’s Tyler Bryant (junior high jump), Arnaud Sioho (junior triple jump and junior 400), Matthew Berry (junior hurdles) and junior relay (Enoque De Dieu, Berry, Gavin Nicholson and Sioho).

Falmouth’s Barrett (senior long jump), Shapiro (junior 55 and junior 200) and Gay (senior 400), Portland’s Jason Hargesheimer (600), Scarborough’s Parker Killiard (senior 200) and Springer (junior 800) and South Portland’s Bryant (junior shot put), Sioho (junior long jump), De Dieu (junior triple jump) and Leo Lomangino (senior triple jump) made the second-team.

The third-team featured Falmouth’s George Klatsky (junior shot put), Portland’s Hargesheimer (senior high jump), Benjamin Prestes (senior high jump and 600) and Blades (two-mile), Scarborough’s John Reed (senior high jump), Wyatt Martin (pole vault), Killiard (senior 55 and senior 400) and Bendetson (senior 800 and mile) and South Portland’s Lomangino (senior high jump), Petros Engelhardt (senior triple jump), Sioho (junior hurdles) and Michael Lawlor (junior 800).

The SMAA girls’ first-team included Deering’s Laura Gin (senior 400), Portland’s Anneliese Collin (junior high jump) and Samantha Moore (600, junior 800 and mile) and its junior relay (Collin, Alisandro Lindos, Avery Black and Moore), 4×400 relay (Collin, Alice Anderson, Lindos and Moore) and sprint medley relay (Evana Wakati, Joy Mbaba, Anderson and Moore), Scarborough’s Caroline Fallona (senior 55 and senior 200), Emerson Flaker (junior 55, junior 200 and junior 400) and its open relay (Julia Black, Fallona, Flaker and Bailey Stoddard-Baugham) and South Portland’s Makyla Edwards-Burrell (junior shot put).

The second-team featured Cheverus’ Annie Vigue (junior 800), Deering’s Claire Dunn (senior high jump), Portland’s Collin (pole vault and junior 400) and Anderson (600) and Scarborough’s Black (senior 400).

The third-team included Deering’s Saya Breiting-Brown (senior hurdles), Falmouth’s Maeve Ginevan (600), Portland’s Lindos (junior long jump and junior 400) and Ruby Jenkins-Henry (senior high jump), Scarborough’s Lila Napolitano (senior high jump), Stoddard-Baughman (senior long jump), Carline Benson (pole vault), Black (senior 55 and senior 200), Kyleigh Record (senior 400) and Sabrina Ocampo (junior 800) and South Portland’s Iris Young (senior high jump).

In the WMC, the boys’ first-team featured Freeport’s Henry Horne (800), Jordan Knighton (high jump) Reece Perry (pole vault) and Brady Webber (high jump), Greely’s William Coull (mile) and Yarmouth’s Harry Dougherty (55).

Cape Elizabeth’s Tommy Gray (shot put) and Greely’s Galen Lucy (triple jump) made the second-team.

The WMC girls’ first-team included Freeport’s Avery Baker-Schlendering (high jump), Kess Benner (pole vault), Lucy Riggs (55 and 200) and Lizalyn Boudreau (400), Greely’s Abigail Jacobson (200), Lia Traficonte (triple jump) and Elise Provencher (400) and Yarmouth’s Emma Butsch (shot put) and Abbie Noble (55).

The second-team featured Cape Elizabeth’s Grace Gray (55 and 200) and Emma Young (400, 800, mile and two-mile) and Freeport’s Lucy Bradford (pole vault).

Swimming

Scarborough’s Ethan Schulz left the opposition in his wake, led the Red Storm to a second straight state title and earned all-conference and all-state honors this winter.

Three of the four swim state titles were won by local squads and not surprisingly, all-star teams reflected their dominance.

The boys’ All-State squad featured Jack McCormick (100 backstroke, medley relay and 200 freestyle relay), Cormac McKenney (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke and medley relay) and David Steinbrick (200 free, 500 free and 400 free relay) of Class B champion Cape Elizabeth, Ethan Schulz (IM, 100 free, medley relay and 400 free relay) and Evan Wardrop (100 back, 500 free, medley relay and 400 free relay) of Class A champion Scarborough, Deering/Portland’s Andy Marvin (200 free relay), Greely’s Matt Desmond (100 free, 200 free, 400 free relay) and South Portland’s David Lawlor (diving) and Nicholas Reid (400 free relay).

Scarborough’s Ethan Schulz was named the boys’ Swimmer of the Year.

The girls’ All-State team included Cookie Mahoney (IM, 100 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay), Hadley Mahoney (200 free and 400 free relay), Lucy Shaw (100 free, 200 free and 400 free relay) and Hope Taylor (IM and 500 free) of Class B champion Cape Elizabeth, along with Falmouth’s Jillian James (diving) and Katrina Waite (100 free, 200 free relay and 400 free relay) and Greely’s Audrey Cohen (100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, medley relay and 400 free relay) and Abby Hollis (medley relay).

Greely’s Audrey Cohen was named the girls’ Swimmer of the Year.

Falmouth’s Jillian James was chosen girls’ Diver of the Year.

Greely’s Audrey Cohen was named the conference’s girls’ Swimmer of the Year.

Falmouth’s Jillian James was chosen the conference’s girls’ Diver of the Year.

Greely’s Rob Hale was named the conference’s Coach of the Year.

Skiing

Waynflete’s Sarah Morgan made the WMC Nordic all-star team.

Falmouth placed Porter Beaule, Ian Christie and Hayden Davis on the SMAA Alpine boys’ all-star team. They were joined by Cheverus’ Reis Stamaris.

Scarborough’s Zachary Bly qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

The SMAA Alpine girls’ squad featured Cheverus’ Maddie Marcisso, Falmouth’s Celia Geci, Margo Hesson, Bridget Jacobsen and Patty Riley and Scarborough’s Ella Carlson and Ella Morse.

Cheverus’ Maddie Marcisso and Olivia McCartney and Scarborough’s Ella Carlson qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

The WMC boys’ Alpine team featured Cape Elizabeth’s Logan Schwartz and Porter Monson, Freeport’s Bobby Strong, Ansel Goode and Ben Barrett and Yarmouth’s Killian Marsh, Tyler Moore and Mathieu Charrette.

The WMC girls’ Alpine squad included Cape Elizabeth’s Anya Monson, Freeport’s Rosie St. Cyr, Luciana Bourgeois, Alexa Scott and Silvi Strong, Greely’s Ruth Weeks and Whitney Bond and Yarmouth’s Brooke Boone.

The WMC Nordic boys’ all-star team included Freeport’s Al Dawson, Will Morris and Teo Steverlynck-Horne, Greely’s Tait Harvey, Bez Mendelsohn and Ben Wall and Yarmouth’s Owen Redfield, Cornelius Welsh and Aksel Yeo.

The WMC Nordic girls’ squad featured Freeport’s Reed Proscia and Jillian Wight, Greely’s Rowan Barry and Sylvia Harvey, Maine Coast Waldorf/NYA’s Lydia Sharp, Waynflete’s Leah Kramer and Sarah Morgan and Yarmouth’s Sonja Bell and Paige Brewer.
