Lawrence P. Rieger

SOUTH PORTLAND – Lawrence P. Rieger, 78, died after a brief illness on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, in Nobleboro with his sister, Patricia, and his best friend of many years, Mary McGee, by his side.

He was born in Portland on Oct. 17, 1944, son to Dr. Paul and Jeanne (Maguire) Rieger. Larry, a.k.a. Lorenzo the Legend left his magical footprint on the earth by creating his own unique path in life. His family spent time in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and then returned to Maine where Larry enjoyed the rest of his life.

A graduate of South Portland High School, Larry attended the Maine College of Art and then started his entrepreneurial career by launching what would become an icon of Portland’s Old Port in the 60’s, The Grand Orange boutique. He found success with the Grand Orange, expanding stores into Lewiston, Brunswick, Augusta, and Boothbay Harbor. In the 80’s, Larry turned his career to real estate and then to marketing by starting his own company, Direct Results. He used his many creative talents to help drive sales at a number of southern Maine businesses and even helped to design and oversee the building of a large production office for Cloutier Direct in the Scarborough Industrial Park.

Larry was a passionate, gifted tennis player and golfer at the Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth. A lifelong member there, he was known for a powerful swing, a sometimes-impish sense of humor, and for his love of the sport, the course, and the comradery he found there.

Over the last decade Larry made a winter home in Boynton Beach, Fla. at a community on the beach named Briny Breezes. He made daily rounds on his turquoise bicycle to the many friends he made there. Larry treasured his time with family and friends most of all. He considered himself lucky to make so many meaningful, lifelong friendships both on and off the greens of Purpoodock Club.

Larry is survived by his two children, Tony and Stacy and their partners, respectively, Ivory and Matt; two sisters, Rictoria and Patricia and their husbands, respectively, Roger and Xavier; one grandchild, Tony and Ivory’s daughter, Isabella; two nephews and one niece, respectively, children to Rictoria and Roger, Sean and Jessica, and Patricia and Xavier’s son, Pablo.

There will be a Celebration of Life for Larry on Saturday, April 22nd at Purpoodock Club of Cape Elizabeth from 3 to 5 p.m.
