Penelope Agnes Welch Nitis

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – Penny Welch Nitis, 73, passed away May 4, 2023, after a short illness with family by her side.

Penny was born in Westbrook on Aug. 19, 1949 and graduated from Westbrook High School in 1967, where she was voted class clown and wittiest student. Penny’s deep compassion and caring led her to a career in nursing, which she pursued for over 25 years. She made many lifelong friends as an operating room nurse, first in New Jersey, and later in Maine at the Mercy Hospital.

She met her husband Georges in Maine in 1987, and held several positions in the various cities that his job took them to, including Washington, D.C., Pittsburg, Pa., and Birmingham, Ala., before retiring to Englewood, Fla., in 2015. Penny was also a lifelong learner as she attended various colleges over the years in pursuit of a degree in psychology.

Although we could list many personal accomplishments in her work career, Penny’s impact on the world was the kindness and compassion she gave to every individual she met. Friend or stranger, young or old, everyone that met Penny came away from the encounter feeling better about themselves. She was the rare individual that could always find a trait to compliment the person on, and it was always delivered with sincerity and a smile.

Here motto in life was “Be kind to everyone you meet because you don’t know the battles they are facing”, and Penny lived that saying to the fullest. She was generous to a fault, both emotionally and financially, and she always saw the best in us, and always forgave the worst in us. She always had time to listen to a friend in need, no matter the challenges she may have been facing personally. She gave encouragement and support to many in need, always leaving them uplifted and laughing. She was truly one of the best of us.

She is survived by her husband Georges and her daughter Meghan, and her three grandsons, Alex, Daniel and Christopher and great-granddaughter Quinn, as well as brothers’ Skip and Roger.

Penny’s wishes were for her ashes to be spread over the rocks at her favorite place on earth, Fort Williams.

A celebration of life for Penny will be held this summer in Maine and details will be provided at a later date.
