Peter M. Foley

PORTLAND – Peter M. Foley, 89, passed away peacefully and ready to see his wife, Lenora, again on May 10, 2023 following an incredible fight with cancer. Peter was blessed to be able to pass away in his home of 54 years, surrounded by his loving children.

Peter Foley was born in Portland on Jan. 14, 1934, to Annie Foley (Conley) and Philip Foley. He graduated from Portland High School and his extensive work history included time at A&P Bakery, Portland Terminal (Railroad), two years in the Army, and bricklaying. He then retired from the United States Post Office in 1999 after 20 years of service.

At the age of 25, he married Lenora (Maietta) Foley after meeting at Higgins Beach and went on to have five children. Peter lived a life full of laughter and wit. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were drawn to his warmth and never-ending (bad) jokes. His children looked up to his infinite generosity and strength even when life was not easy. His wife, children, 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren treasured their time with Peter. He will always be remembered for his love of Forest Gardens, scratching lottery tickets, daily, losing the Powerball every time, yelling at the television when the news (or Boston sports) was on, and making sure a fresh box of Tony’s Donuts was on the counter when anyone came to visit.

Peter is survived and missed by his children, Serena A. Ascanio, Kevin M. Foley and his spouse Lea Foley, Peter M. Foley Jr., Maria E. Foley, and daughter-in-law, Trina Foley. Forever cherished and remembered by his sister, Barbara and brothers Philip and Johnny; and his grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

Peter was predeceased by his wife, Lenora, of 64 years; four brothers, Bartley, Martin, Joseph, and James, and sister, Mary; son, Philip J. Foley; and grandson, Anthony S. Ascanio.

The family would like to thank his wonderful doctors at Intermed and New England Cancer Specialists as well as the compassionate care she received with Hospice of Southern Maine. A funeral mass will be held at St. Pius X Church, 492 Ocean Ave., Portland on May 17 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
