Harriet Routses

PORTLAND – Harriet (Karakatsanis) Routses, 86, of Portland, died Tuesday, May 23, 2023. Harriet was born in Amaliada Pirgos, Peloponese, Greece, the daughter of Vagelis and Venetia Karakatsanis. She came to the United States in her 20’s and eventually settled in the greater Portland area. In 1965 she married Michael John Routses of Portland. They were married for 50 years at the time of her husband’s passing. Harriet and Mike had one daughter, Joanne, who was their greatest gift. Joanne passed away in 2020. Harriet was a devoted wife, loving mother, and a fierce advocate for her loved ones.

Harriet was a talented seamstress with her own successful business in downtown Portland for over 22 years. She valued her relationships with many loyal customers. Her skilled hands were paired with a sharp mind, bringing clarity and purpose to all she took-on.

Mrs. Routses was a faithful, longtime parishioner of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Portland. She supported education and served the needy in Portland through her participation in Daughters of Penelope and the Philoptochos Society. She was a leader and a doer, hospitable and welcoming to all.

Harriet was predeceased by her husband Michael Routses and their beloved daughter Joanne Routes, as well as siblings, Athena and Demetris Karakatsanis. She is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews in the U.S., Canada and Greece.

A Mass will be celebrated at 12 p.m., noon, Tuesday, May 30, at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, 133 Pleasant Street, Portland, Maine 04101. Interment to follow at Forest City Cemetery in South Portland.
