June Astronomy Club meeting and presentation scheduled
The Astronomical Society of Northern New England will hold its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Friday at 7:30 p.m. at The New School, 38 York St. A brief business meeting will precede the meeting at 7 p.m. and also is open to the public.
The meeting will include a presentation by professional astrologer Peggy Schick, who serves individual clients through her private practice in Topsham. The agenda also will include Bernie Reim’s “What’s Up for the Month” and the ever-popular “Astro Shorts,” where attendees and members share questions, activities, news and observations, and Astro Shorts.
For newcomers, questions about the club, observing, telescopes and astronomy in general will be gladly answered by more experienced members.

Maine poet laureate to visit library
Scarborough Public Library continues its Ann P. Hammond Memorial Literature Series with a visit from Maine’s poet laureate 2011-2016, Wesley McNair, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at 48 Gorham Road.
McNair is the author and editor of more than 20 books and recipient of many achievement prizes and medals. A teacher for several decades, he is now professor emeritus and writer in residence at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Trunk & Treasures sale rolls into church lot
Community members and crafters are invited to come and sell their “yard sale” items, treasures or crafts from their car trunk at the Blue Point Congregational Church UCC’s Community Trunk & Treasures sale, to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 236 Pine Point Road.
Setup begins at 8 a.m. Cost is $15 for car space rental or $20 for car space plus a table. Please let organizers know if you have a canopy to set up.
Mike’s Grill will sell hamburgers, hot dogs, soda and chips starting at 10:30 a.m. A church bake table will be available, including coffee.

Find a new book or plant at church sale
A plant and book sale featuring a wide variety of perennials and herbs, both for sun and shade, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Scarborough Free Baptist Church, 55 Mussey Road (Eight Corners).
The event will feature a wide variety of plants, including wild flowers, rhubarb, daylilies, peonies, hostas and gardening items. Books will be sold inside.

Town finance director to speak to residents
The Scarborough Kiwanis Club willsponsor a talk by Scarborough Finance Director Norman Kildow from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Cowbell Burger, 185 U.S. Route 1.
Kildow oversees and manages revenue collections and expenditure payments for the town, and provides financial reporting to town departments and its residents.
The validation vote on Scarborough’s school budget is scheduled for June 27.
Meetings are always free and open to the public.

Madawaska students prepare for Girls on the Run Maine Celebration 5K
More than 800 girls in third to eighth grade from across Maine will gather for the Girls on the Run Maine Celebratory 5K to be held at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Brunswick Recreation Center. About 1,000 family members and community volunteers also plan to be there to support the students.
For the second year, the Madawaska Elementary School’s Girls on the Run team will make the five-hour trek on a bus to Brunswick to participate in the culminating event of the program.
The Girls on the Run Maine Celebratory 5K is the culmination of a 10-week youth development program offered by more than 300 trained volunteer coaches in over 50 schools and community centers across the state. It is available to elementary and middle school students who identify as female or nonbinary. The program is offered twice a year, in the fall and spring.
Girls on the Run is designed to inspire kids of all abilities to recognize and embrace their inner strength and make meaningful connections with others. The program uses physical activity and dynamic discussions to build social, emotional and physical skills while encouraging healthy habits for life. Girls on the Run Maine is a nonprofit in its 11th year.
Each GOTR practice teaches students social-emotional skills they can use to accomplish the GOTR Celebration 5K, as well as other big goals in school and life.

Maine State Music Theatre returns to Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center
After a three-year hiatus, Maine State Music Theatre, the state’s leading professional company known for “Bringing Broadway to Brunswick,” is scheduled to perform the musical revue “MSMT Sings the Best of Broadway” at 7 p.m. Friday at the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center, 18 Bradley St., on the campus of Fryeburg Academy.
The public performance will celebrate the work of some of musical theater’s greatest composers and lyricists, among them Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, and Stephen Sondheim.
Directed and choreographed by MSMT artistic director Curt Dale Clark, the cast of eight, chosen from over 2,000 auditions, makes this alternately witty, hilarious, rousing and poignant production a fitting tribute to America’s unique art form: the Broadway musical.
