BIDDEFORD – Beverly A. Stoops, 75, of Biddeford, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2023 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
She was born in Wabash, Ind. on Jan. 8, 1948, a daughter of Jean and Margaret (Mobberly) Stoops. Beverly graduated from Wabash High School. She graduated with high honors with a Bachelor of Art in Social Science degree from Wheaton College in Illinois. She went on to get her Master of Social Work from the University of Michigan. Beverly worked as a Psychiatric Social Worker and Medical Social Worker from 1973 to 1979.
Beverly’s caring and generous nature lead her to pursue a career in medicine. She did her premedical studies at the University of Cincinnati and received her Doctor of Medicine from Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio in 1984. She moved to Maine in 1987 and established her private practice in Internal Medicine in Biddeford. She retired in 2013. She forged many treasured and long lasting friendships with her patients. A quote from a patient, “She was kind and compassionate.”
Beverly had strong ties to her community. She was a member of Altrusa International of Greater Biddeford-Saco, serving in many positions including President. She served on the Board of Counseling Services and as Medical Director of Kennebunk Nursing.
Beverly believed in education and teaching others. She supervised medical students in Internal Medicine rotations at the University of New England.
During the 1970’s, Beverly was a musician, entertaining audiences with guitar, banjo and singing in the Boston area. Her passion for music continued with singing in the church choir at First Parish Congregational Church in Saco, where she was a member for many years. She loved nature, the outdoors, camping, fly fishing and mineral hunting. She loved the simple pleasures of Maine.
Beverly is survived by her sister Margery Gass and husband Frederick, niece Molly Haskins
and husband William and their daughter Abbey and nephew David Gass and wife Angela. She is also survived by her former office manager, longtime friend and caregiver, Lucille Prescott.
Visiting hours will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 4, 2023, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel, 87 James Street, Saco. A Funeral Service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2023, at First Parish Congregational Church at 12 Beach Street, Saco. Burial will be at a later date next to her parents in Memorial Lawns Cemetery in Wabash, Indiana.
