Soup and sandwich luncheon

Join in on Gray-New Gloucester Recreation’s Community Cafe, geared toward community members age 60 and older. They gather on the second Wednesday of each month at the First Congregational Church vestry, 19 Gloucester Hill Road, for lunch and friendly conversation.

The June 14 menu features soup and sandwiches. Lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. until about 12:30 p.m.

The suggested donation is $8; however, donations of all sizes will be gratefully accepted. No one will be turned away if unable to donate.

Guests are encouraged to RSVP by the first Friday of each month to reserve their meal. For the next cafe, RSVP by calling 926-4126, ext. 231 (leaving a voicemail is OK), or emailing recdirector@newgloucester.com by Friday, June 9. Dietary accommodations are possible, so special requests should be made with the RSVP.

Brickyard Hollow opens

Brickyard Hollow Brewing Company has opened a brewpub and pizzeria at 437 Lewiston Road, where it also hopes to become a community hub with cornhole, frisbee golf, live music and other activities on its 8-acre site, according to a press release. It plans to host Community Nights as well, donating 5% of sales on those evenings to local organizations and causes. Brickyard has other locations in Yarmouth, Freeport, Portland, Ogunquit, Skowhegan, Eustis and Brunswick. To learn more, go to brickyardhollow.com.

Shape Note Singing

Shape Note Singing is an exclusively American tradition that brings people together to sing four-part, acapella hymns and anthems. A group of Shape Note Singers will gather from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at Shaker 1794 Meeting House, 707 Shaker Road.

The gathering is not a rehearsal or performance. Rather, the group sings for themselves, sitting in a hollow square with one voice (soprano, alto, and others) on each side. They all face the center, so they can hear and see each other. They sing primarily from “The Sacred Harp,” 1991 edition and songbook loaners will be available.

The event is free of charge.

The group welcomes beginners and newcomers, with or without musical experience or religious affiliation. Visitors are welcome to sit anywhere and participate as they like or just listen. For more information, contact the Shakers at 926-4597 or info@maineshakers.com.

Spring StoryWalk at Pineland

All ages are welcome to participate in Pineland Farms’ free Spring StoryWalk, a 1-mile stroll on the farm’s trails while stopping to read along the way. “The Tiny Seed” by Eric Carle will kick off the schedule, starting Saturday, June 3.

A guided StoryWalk  is offered from 10 to 11 a.m. every Monday until November, with a different book every two weeks. Online preregistration is required at shop.pinelandfarms.org – search for Spring StoryWalk. The group meets at The Market, 15 Farm View Drive, off Morse Road.

StoryWalk is also available as a self-guided option. It begins near the disc golf courses across from The Market. Look for the white sign pointing the way.

Absentee ballots

Absentee ballots are available for the June 13 municipal election. There is one vacancy each on the Select Board, SAD 15 Board of Directors, and Water District Trustees. The SAD 15 budget validation referendum is also on the ballot.

Request forms for absentee ballots can be found at newgloucester.com under “News and Announcements.” Sample ballots can be accessed there, too. Requests may also be made at the town office; by calling 926-4126, ext. 1; or by mail to New Gloucester Town Office, 385 Intervale Road, New Gloucester, ME 04260.

Completed absentee ballots can be mailed to the town office, dropped off at service window there or deposited in the ballot drop box.
