A flood watch has been issued until 2 a.m. Sunday for much of the state, according to the National Weather Service in Gray.

The flood watch covers western, central and southern Maine, with the exception of a sliver of coastal York County. Heavy rain is expected to continue through the day.

“Coastal Cumberland County is getting pretty hammered right now,” said meteorologist Sarah Thunberg around 10 a.m. Saturday.

The heavy rainfall will turn to showers early Sunday in southern Maine then clear out by the afternoon, she said.

Southern Maine is expected to get 1 to 1.5 inches of rain Saturday, with up to 3 inches in the interior, Rumford-Bethel mountain areas.

So far, June has been wet.

Since the first of the month, 2.72 inches of rain has fallen in Portland, which doesn’t count Saturday’s precipitation. The average amount of rain for the month is 2.35 inches.

“We’re already over the normal for the monthly total for June,” Thunberg said.

That means in low-lying areas, the ground is saturated and prone to flooding.

It is expected to be breezy Saturday night, but the winds are not expected to be strong enough to cause power outages.
