Donald George Curry passed away June 9 at age 87. He was born in Oneonta, New York, to Lenard Curry and Esther Bowman Sargent.
Donald attended Boston University where he received his degree in music education. While at BU, he met Shirley Nielsen of Scarborough. After graduating, they were married, started a family, and moved to South Portland where he took a position with the Cape Elizabeth school system and eventually became music department director.
Donald played bassoon in the Portland Symphony Orchestra, the Winds of Maine Woodwind Quintet, and the Casco Bay Concert Band. After retiring from teaching, Donald moved to Arundel as a full-time employee at the Seashore Trolley Museum, an organization he was avidly involved in since his college days.
Primarily a craftsman of trolley restoration, he also became the museum’s director. Donald was very active with the South Congregational Church and the Kennebunk Portside Rotary Club. In spite of having Parkinson’s Disease, Donald worked diligently to the end of his days.
He is survived by his sister (Priscilla Curry), his three children (Dwight, Denise, David), his three grandchildren (Christopher, Katherine, Mei) and his long-time companion (Denise Macaronas).
A memorial service and reception will be held at South Congregational Church, 2 North St., Kennebunkport on July 9 at 2 p.m.
