Richard Walker Searles

OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Richard Walker Searles “Dick” was born and raised in Bangor. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1949 and went to the University of Maine before transferring to the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, an Abbot of the Friars Senior Society, and received a bachelor of science degree from the Wharton School of Business.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, the New York Army Reserves and the Maine and Delaware National Guards.

Dick received his MBA from the University of Delaware, became a stockbroker and was a senior vice president for Paine Webber in Philadelphia, Pa.

He and his wife, Joan, were married in 1958 and lived for most of their marriage in an early 19th century stone farmhouse near Unionville, Pa. They traveled extensively, visiting all seven continents, and raised three children. Dick was an election judge, served as a U.S. Census Bureau volunteer, and often did the taxes of family and friends.

In 2014, Joan and Dick made their summer residence in Old Orchard Beach into their fulltime home. There, Dick rode his bike well into his 80s, read voraciously and nearly always beat his computer in solitaire.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; his three children, Denny (Holly Huse), Becky (Sean McNally) and Mary Beth (Michael Kraemer); as well as two grandchildren, Ella and Will McNally.

He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather, a loud storyteller and pretty funny guy. He will be greatly missed.
