John D. Cunningham

FREEPORT – John D. Cunningham, 77, passed away peacefully at home after a long illness on Sept. 1, 2023. He was born in Brunswick on July 16, 1946, son of the late David Gilman and Josephine (Porter) Cunningham.

John received his education through the Freeport school system, graduating in 1964. In 1966 he earned his degree from Northern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in Presque Isle, where he studied automotive mechanics. After working at Haverty Buick in Portland for some years, he began employment at the State of Maine DOT, rising eventually to Subforeman first at the Freeport and then at the Yarmouth DOT camps. Later he worked for the Maine Department of Agriculture, Weights & Measures Division, for a total of 31 years with the State, retiring in 2004.

John married Catherine Pothier of Yarmouth on Nov. 11, 1978. They made their home in Freeport, but spent the colder months of winter in Myrtle Beach, SC, for 22 years in later life.

John took an avid interest in stock car racing in the 1970s, at one time even racing his own car. But his passion was golf, begun in the 1980s. He was so instrumental in organizing a local group of golfers at Toddy Brook that they recently named themselves the “Cunningham Group” in his honor. John was touched by this, and proud of his record of 4 holes-in-one.

John is survived by his wife, Catherine; his brothers Paul Cunningham (Diane Soule Cunningham decd.), and Daniel Cunningham (Lucy Smith Cunningham).

Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., on Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, at Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick, Maine 04011. A Funeral Service will commence at 11 a.m., at Brackett Funeral Home. Interment with a Graveside Service will follow at Burr Cemetery, Freeport Maine, at 12:15 p.m.
