Gene A. Carr

SCARBOROUGH – Gene A. Carr, 95, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2024 at The Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

Gene was born in Portland in 1928 to Esther and Leon Carr, where he lived for most of his life.

He received a Brown Memorial Medal for having one of the highest GPA’s of the top10 students in his graduating class at Portland High School.

Gene worked at Central Maine Power Company prior to entering the U.S. Army. After completing basic training at Fort Dix, he was sent to Japan to help rebuild as WWII was ending.

He returned to CMP as a meter reader, worked in the line department, then moved to the Station Repairs Department, retiring as a supervisor after 42 years with the company.

Gene was married in 1950 to his beloved wife, Effie, who passed in 2002. Together they raised a family and enjoyed music, dancing, traveling and most of all, spending time at the family camp on Long Lake in Bridgton.

He was a caring brother to Lorraine McPhee and Edward Carr; a loving husband to Effie Carr for 52 years; and a devoted father to Alan Carr (Marcia), Laurie Willette (Jerry), Linda Dionne (Ron), Susan Carr (Randy Johnson) and his stepson, Bruce Wilson (Sheila). He had nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three nephews and one niece.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at The Maine Veterans Home for the loving care he received while there.

Burial will be private and a Celebration of Life for family will be held at a later date.
