Robert Willard Gordon
WESTBROOK – Robert Willard Gordon of Westbrook passed away on Aug. 4, 2024. Born to Eva Willard and Arthur C. Gordon Sr. on Sept. 13, 1930, Bob was a life-long resident of Duck Pond Road and the Highland Lake community.
He was graduated from Westbrook High School in 1949, Gorham State Teachers College and received his Masters of Education from the University of Maine. He was stationed in Germany while serving in the U.S. Army in the 1950s.
In 1959 he married Rhoda Peterson. They were happily married for 29 years until her untimely death in 1988.
Bob was a well-respected teacher in the Westbrook Elementary Schools for 35 years; enjoying many years at Forest Street School.
Bob was a member of Highland Lake Grange, Highland Lake Church and Stephen Manchester American Legion Post in Westbrook. He was raised to the 32 degree in Warren-Phillips/Saccarappa Masonic Lodge. He was active in local model clubs, Westbrook Historical Society and known for his passion for local and military history.
He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Rhoda; brother, Arthur Gordon Jr. and his wife Barbara.
His is survived by his four children, Peter, Kathleen and husband, David Gowen, Thomas and wife, Debra and Richard; grandchildren Kristen, Brad, Abby, Nathaniel, Hannah and James; and three great-grandchildren. Bob is also survived by nieces Sandra Cort, Mary Lowell and their families.
Bob’s intellect, wit, kindness and consideration of others earned him the appreciation and love of family, students, peers and all those he met on his life’s journey. Proud of his Scottish Ancestry, he embodied a Gordon Clan’s saying, “Do well and let them say…Gordon.”
The family deeply appreciates the devoted care provided to Bob by the staff at The Inn at Village Square and Compassus Hospice.
A funeral service will be held at Highland Lake Congregation Church at 1303 Bridgton Rd., Westbrook, on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Highland Lake Cemetery and a reception at Highland Lake Grange Hall.
