West Nile Virus
reported in Gray
The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Sept. 18 that a dead crow found in Gray on Sept. 1 tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV). This is an isolated incident and there’s currently no evidence of further West Nile Virus cases in our community.
WNV is a disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes that can affect humans, birds, and other mammals. Most people who are infected will have mild or no symptoms, but in some cases, it can cause severe illness requiring hospitalization. You can learn more about WNV at https://www.maine.gov/dhhs/mecdc/infectious-disease/epi/vector-borne/west-nile/index.shtml
People should try and avoid mosquitoes if possible to decrease their exposure risk to diseases like WNV. Wearing insect repellant and protective clothing, eliminating mosquito breeding grounds like birdbaths and flowerpots, and using fans to keep insects away are suggested measures.
If you have any questions, contact Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention at their 24-hour disease reporting and consultation number: 1-800-821-5821.
