Robert Bruce McGhee

MIAMI, Fla. – It is with great sadness that the McGhee family is sharing the news that Robert Bruce McGhee passed away peacefully on August 7, 2024, in the ICU at Kendall Hospital in Miami, Fla. Patty, his wife of 42 years, and his children, Neil and Alicia were by his side.

Robert was born in Schweinfurt, Germany, in 1954 and adopted by Jeanne and Bruce McGhee who moved the family from Germany to Portland in 1958. Robert graduated from Deering High School in 1972 and enjoyed great memories of playing basketball, running track and taking crazy to new levels with some amazing friends. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1980 and spent many years as a Standardbred owner, breeder, trainer and driver. During his lifetime he also had several farms, a grain business, a long-haul trucking company and managed a family timber operation. He was generous to family and friends, closely involved in his children’s lives, and particularly enjoyed the company of his GSPs during retirement. Robert was a great lover of music throughout his life. Upon his death, he left us with specific instructions to scatter his ashes on Cold Stream Pond and to play the song the Climb; keep on moving, keep climbing, keep the faith.

There will be a memorial gathering at Brunos, 33 Allen Ave., Portland, on October 18, from 5-9 p.m. We hope to see old friends with great memories. Patty can be reached at [email protected] if you would like to reach out.
