Robert Cheney
Robert F. Cheney, 84 of Kennebunk, passed away peacefully at Southridge Living Center in Biddeford on Aug. 6, 2024, with his family by his side. “Bobby,” or “Goofy,” affectionately known as, was born July 12, 1940. He was raised in Kennebunk and attended Kennebunk schools.
He joined the National Guard after high school and started driving trucks for Roadway and others, committing to 55 years of working on the road. He lived on his own terms and a very modest and simple, fulfilling way. Although our father was not physically present in most of our lives, we always knew he was there and had a quiet knowing of his love for us.
We were blessed to each have him be a part of our lives for a brief period of time. It will never have been long enough, but each of us will be ever thankful for the time lent and truly got to appreciate who he was, as a man and a father. A wonderful and funny sense of humor, charismatic and charming. A heart of gold through the layers of honesty. His great wit and observations would have you bent over belly laughing. He only spoke the truth.
The many stories he shared made us smile and was beautiful to see him relive and laugh at all his shenanigans with friends and a life filled with hard and honest work. He had a very close circle of friends that shared his love and passion for motorcycles, fast cars and common sense.
His honesty to himself, to others will be the legacy we hold for our father, our friend. Never met anyone more real.
Robert was predeceased by his father, Frederick Cheney and his mother Phyllis Cheney. His brother Frederick Cheney Jr. and sister Elizabeth Moore. His longtime partner Patricia and his beloved dog Hunter.
Robert leaves behind his son Robert F. Mackenzie of Kennebunk, his beloved daughter Tina Chase of Kingfield; Three beautiful granddaughters; a great-granddaughter; and his loving friends Peggy Chase, Lovejoy, Pudgie and Patrica Casey.
The family would like to thank Southridge, especially Jackie, and his caring team there; Meagan for always trying; and Hospice of Southern Maine. His friends that were there for him when he really needed it. You know who you are.
Ken Lovejoy … you were the best friend our dad could have ever asked for. Gratitude for all you did, not only for him, but for us. We appreciate everything you are.
Our father had a huge soft spot for dogs. Please consider donating to a shelter in honor of him.
Please join us in celebrating Robert “Goofy” Cheney at a later date. If interested in attending, please email his daughter, Tina, at elevenalaskaeleven@gmail.com.
