Allan M. Levinsky

PORTLAND – Allan M. Levinsky of Portland, passed away on Nov. 1, 2024, at Gosnell House in Scarborough; he was at peace and surrounded by his loved ones.

Allan was born in Portland in 1934. The son of Marianne (Weiss) and Benjamin Levinsky, Allan graduated from Portland High School in 1952 and went on to serve his country in the Air Force during the Korean conflict.

Upon his return, Allan met and married his sweetheart, Sandra (Gill), from Lawrence, Mass.; they were married for 66 years.

Under the auspices of the G.I. bill, Allan graduated from the University of Maine with a degree in history.

Allan had an interesting and varied professional life, working in radio news, sports broadcasting, public relations and sales, both in Maine and from the early 1970s onward in Binghamton, N.Y.

After his retirement in 1998, Allan and Sandra returned to Maine and Allan rekindled his original academic interest – history.

He was a beloved docent at the Joshua Chamberlain House in Brunswick and served as the Visitors Services Coordinator at the Longfellow House in Portland. During this time he researched and wrote four books.

In a proclamation dated March 5, 2008, the Maine Legislature recognized Allan for having “educated and entertained countless tourists, students and fellow Mainers with enthusiasm and a comprehensive knowledge of Maine’s history and heritage.” The proclamation cites his “A short history of Portland” as the “first comprehensive narrative of Maine’s largest city to be published since the early 20th century.”

Allan is survived by wife, Sandra; daughter, Lori and her husband Paul; son, Michael and his wife, Marie, and their children, Allan‘s cherished grandchildren, Vaughn and Isabelle.
